The French estoc or English "tuck" was a type of European sword in use from the 14th to 17th centuries. Characterized as having a cruciform hilt with a grip for two handed use and a straight, edgeless but sharply pointed blade of around 0.91 metres (36 in) to 1.32 metres (52 in) long.


The estoc was a variation of the longsword designed for fighting against mail or plate armour.

History

As armour improved, so did the methods of attacking the armour. It was quickly realized that cutting weapons were losing their effectiveness, so crushing weapons such as maces and axes were utilized. Thrusting weapons that could split the rings of mail, or find the joints and crevices of plate armour, were also employed. Long tapered swords could also be used as a lance once the lance was splintered. Thus was the estoc developed. The French word estoc translates to thrust. Tuck is the abbreviated English version of the word. Many consider the estoc a forerunner of the rapier, but more likely it is a merging of the espada ropera, a civilian sword, with the effective, and lighter estoc, that produced the rapier. The long, straight blade was very rigid and could be thrust with one hand, or the second hand could be used to deliver an even more powerful thrust.

While there is nothing to stop an estoc being one-handed, most were two-handed, being used half-sword or two hands on the grip.

Kalinka
"Kalinka" (Russian: Калинка) is a Russian song written in 1860 by the composer and folklorist Ivan Larionov and first performed in Saratov as part of a theatrical entertainment that he had composed.[1] Soon it was added to the repertory of a folk choral group.

The refrain of the song refers to the kalinka, which is the snowball tree (Viburnum opulus). It has a speedy tempo and light-hearted lyrics. The main refrain (Kalinka, Kalinka...) increases in tempo each time it is sung. One of the best-known singers of this song was Evgeny Belyaev (1926-1994) who was considered to be one of the best singers of the piece.

Physical contact distinguishes humans from other animals. From a warm handshake or sympathetic hug to a congratulatory pat on the back, we have developed complex languages, cultures, and emotional expression through physical contact. But in a tech-saturated world, non-sexual human touch is in danger of becoming rare, if not obsolete. Despite the benefits of digital advancement, it is vital to preserve human touch in order for us truly to thrive.

Humans become nearly unrecognizable in the absence of touch. Two hundred years ago, French scientists spotted a creature resembling a human running through the forests. Once captured, they determined he was 11 years old and had run wild in the forests for much of his childhood. Originally the child, "Victor," was determined to be an idiot; French physicians and psychiatrists eventually concluded he had been deprived of human physical touch, which had retarded his social and developmental capacities.

Scientific research now correlates physical touch with the following important areas:

    Decreased violence. Less touch as a child leads to greater violence. American developmental psychologist James W. Prescott proposed that the origins of violence in society were related to the lack of mother-child bonding. Child developmental research illustrates that the absence of physical bonding and healthy attachment between an adult and child may result in lifelong emotional disturbances.
     
    Greater trust between individuals. Touch helps to bond people together. Daniel Keltner, the founding director of the Greater Good Science Center and professor of psychology at University of California, Berkeley, cites the work of neuroscientist Edmund Ross, who found that physical touch activates the brain's orbitofrontal cortex, linked to feelings of reward and compassion. According to Keltner, "studies show that a simple touch can trigger release of oxytocin, aka 'the love hormone.'" Our skin contains receptors that directly elicit emotional responses, through stimulation of erogenous zones or nerve endings that respond to pain, according to researchers Auvray, Myin, and Spence.
     
    Economic gain. Keltner links economic benefits to physical touch, probably because “touch signals safety and trust; it soothes. Basic warm touch calms cardiovascular stress. It activates the body’s vagus nerve, which is intimately involved with our compassionate response.” NBA teams whose players touch each other more, for example, win more games.
     
    Decreased disease and stronger immune system. Physical touch may also decrease disease. According to research conducted at the University of North Carolina, women who receive more hugs from their partners have lower heart rates and blood pressure: “Hugs strengthen the immune system...The gentle pressure on the sternum and the emotional charge this creates activates the Solar Plexus Chakra. This stimulates the thymus gland, which regulates and balances the body’s production of white blood cells, which keeps you healthy and disease free.”

    Research at University of California's School of Public Health found that getting eye contact and a pat on the back from the doctor may boost the survival rate of patients with complex diseases.
     
    Stronger team dynamics. Paul Zak, author of The Moral Molecule, argues, “We touch to initiate and sustain cooperation.” He conducted a “neuroeconomics” study from which he argues that hugs or handshakes are likely to cause the release of the neurochemical oxytocin, which increases the chances that a person will treat you “like family," even it you just met.
     
    More non-sexual emotional intimacy. Interpersonal touch has a powerful impact on our emotions. Studies have shown that a gentle brush of a woman's arm can boost a man's chances in love; another study showed that two-thirds of women agreed to dance with a man who touched her on the arm a second or two before making the request.
     
    Greater learning engagement. When teachers touch students platonically, it encourages their learning. French psychologist Nicolas Guéguen reports (link is external) that when teachers pat students in a friendly way, those students are three times as likely to speak up in class. Another recent study has found that when librarians pat the hand of a student checking out a book, that student says he or she likes the library more and is more likely to return.
     
    Overall wellbeing. Adults require human touch to thrive. Keltner says, "In recent years, a wave of studies has documented some incredible emotional and physical health benefits that come from touch. This research is suggesting that touch is truly fundamental to human communication, bonding, and health."

    As Sharon K. Farber says, “Being touched and touching someone else are fundamental modes of human interaction, and increasingly, many people are seeking out their own professional touchers and body arts teachers—chiropractors, physical therapists, Gestalt therapists, Rolfers, the Alexander-technique and Feldenkrais people, massage therapists, martial arts and T’ai Chi Ch’uan instructors. And some even wait in physicians’ offices for a physical examination for ailments with no organic cause—they wait to be touched.”

In conclusion: Physical touch is the foundational element of human development and culture. The growing preoccupation with digital media versus personal physical contact, combined with the social and legal restrictions over physical contact in our schools and workplaces, may unintentionally affect these factors negatively. To foster a safe social environment in a climate of mediated communication, we should intentionally hold on to physical touch.

Ευρεία φιλοσοφική κίνηση, που άρχισε κατά την πρώτη μεταπολεμική περίοδο στην Αυστρία και στη Γερμανία και διαδόθηκε κατόπιν - με ποικίλες κατευθύνσεις - κυρίως στις αγγλόφωνες χώρες. Συνώνυμες έννοιες είναι ο λογικός εμπειρισμός, λογικός θετικισμός. Ο γενικός ορισμός περιλαμβάνει σχολές και προσωπικότητες διαφορετικές ως προς τη σφαίρα των ενδιαφερόντων και των προσανατολισμών τους, που όλες όμως συγγενεύουν σε ορισμένα σημεία, όπως είναι η αντιμεταφυσική κριτική, η προσπάθεια της ενσωμάτωσης της πειραματικής έρευνας μέσα στα σχήματα της λογικοτυπικής ανάλυσης, η αναφορά στην ανάλυση του λόγου ως μέσου και προϋπόθεσης ενός επιστημονικού τρόπου φιλοσοφικού λογισμού, η αντίληψη της φιλοσοφίας ως μεθοδολογίας της γνώσης.

Σχετικές με την κίνηση του νεοθετικισμου υπήρξαν ήδη από την αρχή οι λογικές και μεθοδολογικές αναζητήσεις των πολωνικών σχολών (Βαρσοβία και Κρακοβία), οι αναζητήσεις της σχολής του Γκέτινγκεν για τις θεμελιώδεις αρχές των μαθηματικών (Πάουλ, Μπέρνε κ.ά.), όπως και εκείνες του κέντρου των λογικιστικών σπουδών που ίδρυσε στο Μίνστερ ο Χάινριχ Σολτς. Τα διάφορα ρεύματα του νεοθετικισμού είχαν όργανό τους το περιοδικό Erkenntnis, που εκδιδόταν από το 1930 έως το 1938 και διευθυνόταν από τον Κάρναπ και τον Ράιχενμπαχ. Με την επικράτηση του ναζισμού, πολλοί εκπρόσωποι της κίνησης αναγκάστηκαν να μεταναστεύσουν, γεγονός που ευνόησε (χωρίς αμφιβολία) τη διάδοση της κίνησης και τη μορφοποίηση των εξελίξεών της. Ιδιαίτερα στην Αμερική ο νεοθετικισμος πλουτίστηκε από τη συνεισφορά τάσεων διαφορετικής προέλευσης, όπως ο πραγματισμός και ο μπιχεβιορισμός και από το 1938 άρχισε η έκδοση της International Encyclopedia of Unified Science. Cosmic Rays: what is the probability they will affect a program?

Once again I was in a design review, and encountered the claim that the probability of a particular scenario was "less than the risk of cosmic rays" affecting the program, and it occurred to me that I didn't have the faintest idea what that probability is.

This means a probability of 3.7 × 10^-9 per byte per month, or 1.4 × 10^-15 per byte per second. If your program runs for 1 minute and occupies 20 MB of RAM, then the failure probability would be 1.8e-6
Error checking can help to reduce the aftermath of failure. Also, because of more compact size of chips as commented by Joe, the failure rate could be different from what it was 20 years ago.

Tickle torture

Tickle torture is the use of tickling to abuse, dominate, harass, humiliate, interrogate or even "prank" someone. The victim laughs even if he or she finds the experience unpleasant because the laughter is an innate reflex rather than social conditioning. Tickle torture can either be consensual or forced, depending on the circumstances.[1] If tickle torture is consensual, it is usually done as a part of some sort of sexual ritual or another mode of affection. Forced tickle torture can either be used for mild interrogation purposes or simply for a harmless method of dominating someone.

Chinese tickle torture is an ancient form of torture practiced by the Chinese, in particular the courts of the Han Dynasty. Chinese tickle torture was a punishment for nobility since it left no marks and a victim could recover relatively easily and quickly.[2]

Another example of tickle torture was used in ancient Rome, where a person’s feet were dipped in a salt solution, and a goat was brought in to lick the solution off. This type of tickle torture would only start as tickling, eventually becoming extremely painful.[2]

Cost

A major obstacle is the cost of producing antimatter even in small quantities. As of 2004, the cost of producing 1 millionth of a gram of antimatter was estimated at $60 billion. By way of comparison the cost of the Manhattan project to produce the first atomic weapon was estimated at $23 billion at 2007 prices.[10]

Smaller one off assassination weapons are more economically feasible: A modern MK3 hand grenade contains 227g of TNT. One billionth of a gram of positrons contains as much energy as 37.8 kilograms (83 pounds) of TNT, making the 2004 cost of a 'positron hand grenade' (10 trillionth of a gram of antimatter, 378g TNT equivalent) that could be fitted in a sniper's bullet for $600,000. This excludes the cost of the micro containment device, if such a thing is possible.
