Όταν ο Θανάσης Παπακωνσταντίνου αντίκρισε για πρώτη φορά αυτή την φωτογραφία, δημοσιευμένη ανάμεσα στις 5 κορυφαίες στιγμές του φωτορεπορτάζ, την θεώρησε απλά υπερτιμημένη: Ένας ξερακιανός τύπος, αλλοτινών καιρών, που κάπνιζε ανέμελα το τσιγάρο του.
Τότε δεν φανταζόταν καν πως το όνομα αυτού του ανθρώπου θα κοσμούσε το εξώφυλλο της νέας δισκογραφικής του δουλειάς. Εξίσου ανυποψίαστοι προσήλθαν στην αρχή της εβδομάδας και πολλοί Ηρακλειώτες, που θέλησαν να παρακολουθήσουν την κοινή εμφάνιση του Διονύση Σαββόπουλου και του Θανάση Παπακωνσταντίνου στο Κηποθέατρο «Νίκος Καζαντζάκης». Ο τίτλος του CD τους, που κυκλοφόρησε στις αρχές του μήνα, είναι «Ο Σαμάνος» και μοιάζει αρχικά να παραπέμπει στον γητευτή εκείνων των παράδοξων δοξασιών, που ελπίζουν ακόμη στα μάγια και στα θαύματα.
Αλλά αν πράγματι είναι έτσι, τότε ποιος είναι ο Φορτίνο Σαμάνο; Είναι ο άνθρωπος της φωτογραφίας και συνάμα ένα από τα πλέον ενδιαφέροντα «αφηγηματικά» τραγούδια, που περιέχει το νέο μουσικό τους πόνημα.
Ο βραζιλιάνος φωτογράφος Σαλγκάδο έβαλε χρόνια πριν τη λεζάντα στη φωτογραφία, γράφοντας: «Ο Φορτίνο Σαμάνο καπνίζει το τελευταίο τσιγάρο πριν από την εκτέλεσή του. Βλέπουμε, σημείωνε ο Σαλγκάδο, έναν άνθρωπο σε ειρήνη με τον εαυτό του και με τον θάνατο». Ο εικονιζόμενος είναι ο Μεξικανός υπολοχαγός του Ζαπάτα, που εκτελέστηκε το 1917 από τον ομοσπονδιακό στρατό. Δευτερόλεπτα πριν την εκτέλεσή του ζήτησε ένα τσιγάρο και πόζαρε ακουμπισμένος σε ένα πέτρινο τοίχο, χαμογελώντας άφοβα στο φακό του Agustin Victor-Casasola. Στάση τόσο παράδοξα γενναία για έναν άνθρωπο, που έχει απέναντι του τον εκτελεστή του !!!
Οι στίχοι του ομώνυμου τραγουδιού που σκάρωσε ο Θανάσης Παπακωνσταντίνου μοιάζουν με σύντομο θεατρικό σκετσάκι σε τρεις πράξεις και με τρεις διαφορετικούς αφηγητές: τον ίδιο τον Σαμάνο, τον εκτελεστή και .. το τσιγάρο του.

Ο Φορτίνο Σαμάνο
καπνίζει και σκέφτεται:
Είμαι ό,τι δεν έζησα,
είμαι η βροχή που θα 'ρθει
να δροσίσει άγνωστων
γυναικών το κορμί.
Βράδυ στα κρεβάτια τους
πως στενάζουν ξαναμμένες
ποιος Σαμάνος έφερε τούτη τη βροχή...''

«Όταν διάβασα τη λεζάντα της φωτογραφίας, λέει ο Θανάσης Παπακωνσταντίνου, ανατρίχιασα. Η στάση του Φορτίνο Σαμάνο δεν έχει καμία σχέση με τη σημερινή πραγματικότητα. Ίσως γι’ αυτό με συγκίνησε. Οι τωρινοί άνθρωποι, με τη συμβολή της τηλεόρασης, έχουμε υποστεί δύο σημαντικές ήττες: Από τη μια, έχουμε εθιστεί στον πόνο και στον θάνατο των άλλων –μέχρι και ζωντανή αναμετάδοση πολέμων έχουμε παρακολουθήσει– και από την άλλη, ακριβώς επειδή νομίζουμε ότι είμαστε πάντα στη θέση του θεατή, όταν χτυπήσει την πόρτα μας κάποια συμφορά ή ο ίδιος ο θάνατος ξαφνιαζόμαστε και τρομάζουμε».

Ο στρατιώτης με τ' όπλο
σημαδεύει και σκέφτεται:
Με μια κίνηση απλή
θα του κλέψω ό,τι έχει ζήσει.
Είμ' ένας μικρός θεός,
είμ' ένα στοιχειό.
Πάνω από το αίμα του
αύριο εδώ την ίδια ώρα
ερπετά θα σέρνονται όπως κάνω κι εγώ...''

Στο τραγούδι οι φωνές των δύο τραγουδοποιών συναντιώνται για να φτιάξουν μία μουσική μυσταγωγία. Η γενικότερη όμως έκπληξη αυτής της δουλειάς δεν είναι πως οι δύο τους απλά επέλεξαν να ανέβουν στη σκηνή μαζί. Είναι –μάλλον- πως ο Διονύσης Σαββόπουλος για πρώτη φορά επέλεξε το ρόλο του βασικού ερμηνευτή στο δίσκο ενός άλλου δημιουργού. Η φωνή του έντυσε τα τραγούδια του Θανάση Παπακωνσταντίνου τόσο ταιριαστά, που δύσκολα αναγνωρίζεις πια ποιό ανήκει σε ποιόν. Αλλά ο «Σαμάνος» ανήκει και στους δύο αναμφίβολα. Κι η αφήγηση του τσιγάρου του στο τρίτο μέρος του τραγουδιού είναι ακόμη πιο καταλυτική:

Το τελευταίο τσιγάρο
κι εκείνο σκέφτεται:
Θα γίνω γέλιο να κρυφτώ
σε παιδιά που ξεφαντώνουν
Ο καιρός θα χάνεται
ώσπου κάποιο απ' αυτά
θα φωνάξει "λιμπερτά".
Κι όπως θα κοιτάει τις κάνες
θα βρεθώ στα χείλη του
σαν τσιγάρο ξανά.

Πόσο γοητευτικό μοιάζει να αφηγούνται τα τραγούδια ξεχασμένες ή μισοκρυμμένες ιστορίες.. Τόσο ο Σαββόπουλος, όσο κι ο Παπακωνσταντίνου έχουν δίκαια «κατηγορηθεί» για αποτύπωση της εποχής στις ρύμες και τις μουσικές τους. Στη σκηνή μαζί φτιάχνουν ένα «τοπίο μαγικό». Άλλοτε με ένταση κι άλλοτε ψιθυριστά, σου θυμίζουν πως είναι κι οι δύο άνθρωποι που «ήρθαν από μακριά» κι αυτό το εισπράττεις κάθε φορά που σου κουβαλούν τα τραγούδια τους. Ιδιαίτερα ο Διονύσης Σαββόπουλος, που εξακολουθεί να είναι από τις πιο δυσερμήνευτες και παθιασμένες σχέσεις, που ανέπτυξε η σύγχρονη Ελλάδα με τους τραγουδοποιούς της. Ίσως επειδή υπήρξε για καιρό το τελευταίο καταφύγιο ενός ασυμβίβαστου ρομαντισμού, που οι περισσότεροι περιφέραμε εν κρυπτώ.
