This Mortal Coil

This Mortal Coil was not a band, but a unique collaboration of musicians recording in various permutations, the brainchild of 4AD kingpin Ivo Watts-Russell. The idea was to allow artists the creative freedom to record material outside of the realm of what was expected of them; it also created the opportunity for innovative cover versions of songs personal to Ivo. An example of this was the Cocteau Twins-starring version of Tim Buckley's ‘Song to the Siren’ which became the first This Mortal Coil release in 1983. Originally intended as a B-side for the ‘Sixteen Days’ 12", the result was so powerful that it was decided it should be the A-side of a 7" single. This Mortal Coil's full-length debut, It'll End In Tears, arrived in October 1984 and was a long-term feature at the top of the UK Indie charts. In addition to the Cocteaus, this brilliantly-woven aural tapestry featured members of 4AD artists Colourbox, Dead Can Dance, Modern English, Xmal Deutschland and The Wolfgang Press, plus ex-Magazine/Buzzcocks frontman Howard Devoto and celebrated cellist Martin McCarrick (who has worked with everyone from Marc Almond to Therapy?). Ivo turned his attention to the follow-up record shortly after It'll End In Tears was released. Work began at Palladium in Edinburgh, with Martin McCarrick and studio proprietor Jon Turner, and the record was finished with John Fryer at Blackwing in London. Named after a song by the '60s band Fever Tree, Filigree And Shadow was intended from the start as a double album. As before, he drew on a large pool of musicians - Simon Raymonde made important contributions, as did members of Colourbox, Dif Juz and The Wolfgang Press - but this time the bulk of the vocalists came from outside 4AD's orbit. The selection of cover versions included material by Tim Buckley, Gene Clark, Tom Rapp, Judy Collins and Colin Newman. Filigree And Shadow was issued in September 1986, preceded by a limited edition 10-inch single coupling striking interpretations of Van Morrison's ‘Come Here My Love’ and Talking Heads' ‘Drugs’. A reflection of a turbulent period in Ivo's life, 1990's Blood was always intended to be the collective's final recording. Once again, John Fryer, Jon Turner and Martin McCarrick all played significant roles in shaping the music, while the vocals came from This Mortal Coil newcomers such as Caroline Crawley, Heidi Berry, Kim Deal and Tanya Donelly. Cover versions this time out included songs by Chris Bell, Syd Barrett, Rain Parade, Rodney Crowell and Mary Margaret O'Hara, while Ivo's own lyrics graced several of the album's originals.

Στο 01:16:57 μπαίνει το βραζιλιάνικο που το απογειώνει και μπριζώνεται να κόψει την πάρλα και να πιάσουν φωτιά τα ποτενσιόμετρα (το crossfader το έχει ρυθμισμένο ανάποδα = αριστερά παίζει το δεξί κομμάτι και δεξιά παίζει το αριστερό)
(To έχω ξαναποστάρει αλλά τέτοιο απίστευτο μιξάρισμα από το σημείο που ξεκινάει να κάνει scratching με τα samples από σαξόφωνα μέχρι την αρχή του In Her Majesty Secret Service των Propellerheads δεν έχω ξαναακούσει)

The number of samples he used from obscure films and tv programs never failed to impress me. His sound was unique, tuff yet soulful. A true inspiration of an artist.

Shem McCauley Passes Away

DJ and producer Shem McCauley has died.

The acclaimed maker of many a prog house classic under the name Slacker passed away in Thailand last weekend, according to reports.

It's not yet known the circumstances or cause of death, but the DJ community has been quick to pay tribute to him.

Sasha wrote on Twitter: “RIP Shem (Slacker) So sorry to hear about his passing. Top geezer and inspirational producer. Such sad news.”

John Digweed added: “Shem was a great DJ, amazing producer and a good friend to many, me included. Sadly he passed away last weekend. I will be broadcasting one of the most popular mixes he did for me, almost 6 years to the day. He called it 'Obsessive Sounds' and I am going to play the 60 minutes in it's entirety so please make sure you tune in to pay your respects. Shem you will be missed my friend. Your music will always be with with us.”

Pete Tong weighed in too, saying: “Very sad to hear the Slacker passed away. Shem, RIP. Used to hammer this back in the day...”

Well-known UK production team which was responsible for hits like "Your Face," and "Scared," which became anthems of the mid-90's progressive house/trance scene.
Later Shem McCauley went solo and continued work under the 'Slacker' guise with multiple tracks being released on his Jukebox In The Sky label.

Sadly, Shem put an end to his own life in Bangkok, Thailand over the weekend of 21st/22nd January 2012.

BIOGRAPHY
Slacker is Shem McCauley, a veteran DJ and producer of critical acclaim. In his extensive years in the business, there isn’t much Shem hasn’t been involved with at one time or another. Currently, much of his time is taken up as one of the most consiste..
As a DJ and producer Shem McCauley AKA Slacker continues to be on the cutting edge, with a reach far beyond most of his contemporaries, a history spanning numerous musical genres and a diverse checklist of fans throughout the business.

With a career spanning nearly two decades, it is little wonder that Slacker is usually one step ahead of the game; this is more apparent than ever since the introduction of Ableton Live into the marketplace has finally given him the technology to produce the live show he has always wanted. With a back catalogue boasting over 50 original tracks, and in excess of 100 remixes under his various guises as Streets Ahead, Nation 12, Ramp, Live It!, Head Honcho and Slacker, Shem has been busy developing a new “laptop live” show which will enable him to make every performance unique, remixing live any element of each track as he chooses and giving him the ability to incorporate the many quirky samples and secret riffs that up until now have been locked away in Slacker towers. Throw in a frenzy of scratching and effects from Shem on the CDJ and you have a heady brew indeed.

A DJ for over 16 years, the words “been there, done that!” spring to mind. The world map on his website pinpointing the multitude of cities he has played testifies to his global popularity. Originally as DJ Streets Ahead, Shem was one of the pioneers of the UK Hip Hop scratch scene, playing alongside the likes of Tim Westwood and picking up production and remix credits beside Roxanne Shante and Public Enemy. As a student in Brighton, England he established various sound systems alongside fellow South Coast boys Norman Cook and Carl Cox. Production success followed first as Nation 12 with “Listen to the Drummer”, and then after setting up stall with musician and producer Simon Rogers as Ramp, with the singles “Rock the Discotek” and “Stomp”. Both became international club classics.

Looking to establish himself further, Shem created a hybrid of his own funk roots with more contemporary house sounds under the moniker of Slacker. The first Slacker single, “Feel Space”, a track that sounds as fresh today as when it was made, became an instant club hit. Shem’s third single “Scared” re-wrote the rule book on progressive house, a haunting anthem with enough funk to rock any dance floor. A record deal with XL followed and “Scared” along with follow-up single “Your Face” went top 40 in the UK and achieved major international success.

On the crest of this wave, Slacker established a live show and heavy touring alongside label mates The Prodigy ensued. It was while touring that Shem rediscovered his love of Djing, and in 1998 he hit the road properly again. He has been criss-crossing the globe ever since. In this time he has enjoyed residencies at Groovejet in Miami, Orbit in Lima, Peru, Slinky in Bournemouth and Fierce in Hong Kong, earnings platinum helpings of air miles throughout the world, especially across the U.S and Asia.

During this period Shem successfully juggled his travelling with further productions, ably assisted by studio partner Simon Rogers. A slew of remixes, such as Junkie XL, Trancesetters, Breeder and Bedrock - many still viewed as classics today - made the Slacker sound the most respected in the business. “Essential New Tunes”, dance chart Number Ones and features on top compilations became the norm. Eager to develop their release schedule, the decision was taken to launch Slacker’s own label, Jukebox in the Sky, and the singles have come thick and fast. Alongside their Northern Exposure classic, Head Honcho’s “Walls of Jericho”, came Slacker’s “Looky Thing”, played by a diverse selection of DJs from Seb to Jules to Seaman to Ivan Smagghe (of Black Strobe). Head Honcho’s “Medicine” is still being hammered by DJs, most consistently Sasha, a year after its release. The decision to concentrate on furthering the label has paid huge rewards, setting the imprint up as one of the strongest of its genre and enjoying regular licenses from the likes of Global Underground, Bugged Out! and Ministry of Sound.

The label continues to go from strength to strength with numerous Slacker original productions ready for release in the coming months, in conjunction with the recent launch of the label’s comprehensive website and webshop. Slacker’s next single, “Best Boyfriend”, will be out mid-November, packaged with remixes by The Scumfrog and Steiger. Currently Shem is back on the road and covering the globe with more than ever to offer, not only as a DJ but now also performing one of the most exciting and revolutionary laptop live shows on the market. Slacker? Far from it!

Slacker, whose real name was Shem McCauley, was a British electronic music house, hip hop and R&B producer. He owned Jukebox in the Sky record label. He was also known under the names "Head Honcho", "Ramp" and "DJ Streets Ahead". Slacker, who was based in England, had released records on many labels including XL Recordings, Loaded Records, and Perfecto Records.

γεμίζει το ποτήρι και μου ψιθυρίζει ΥΓΕΙΑ
