A Webinar on the Emerging Flexible Optical Networking Paradigm - Organized by IEEE ComSoc EMEA Region

IEEE ComSoc EMEA Region is bringing a complimentary webinar to benefit the ComSoc community on Wednesday, 18 December, 4:00 pm. (Central European time). The topic is on the emerging Flexible Optical Networking Paradigm.

Network traffic has consistently grown at an exponential rate. Yet, there's no indication this relentless trend will cease. The rigid fixed-grid wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical networks can no longer keep up with the bandwidth-hungry and highly dynamic services. The available spectrum in optical fibers becomes occupied, approaching its fundamental limits. The research community has focused on seeking more advanced optical transmission and networking solutions to utilize the available bandwidth more effectively. Here is when the spectrum and spatially flexible/elastic optical networking paradigm has emerged, as a way to offer efficient use of the available optical resources.

The Flexible Networking Puzzle

Professor Ioannis Tomkos will provide a comprehensive view of the different pieces composing the “flexible networking puzzle” with special attention on the occurring interactions between the different research fields.

The webinar will start with physical layer technologies, possibilities to implement flexible transceivers and flexible optical switching operating on a flexible frequency grid. Subsequently, the discussion will cover issues associated with the design, planning and optimization of spectrum and spatially flexible optical networks. The associated challenges and future research directions for all pieces of the “flexible networking puzzle” will be revealed.

Abstract
Network traffic has consistently grown at an exponential rate and there is no indication that this relentless trend will cease. At present, the industry is hard-pressed to identify how future networks will continue to scale in capacity, while reducing the overall energy consumption and ensuring the economic viability of the deployed networks. It is understood that rigid fixed-grid wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) optical networks can no longer keep up with the emerging bandwidth-hungry and highly dynamic services. As the available spectrum in optical fibers becomes occupied and is approaching fundamental limits, the research community has focused on seeking more advanced optical transmission and networking solutions that utilize the available bandwidth more effectively. To this end, the spectrum and spatially flexible/elastic optical networking paradigm has emerged as a way to offer efficient use of the available optical resources.
In this talk we will try to provide a comprehensive view of the different pieces composing the “flexible networking puzzle” with special attention given to the occurring interactions between the different research fields. Starting from the physical layer technologies, possibilities to implement flexible transceivers and flexible optical switching operating on a flexible frequency grid will be presented. Subsequently we will discuss issues associated with the design, planning and optimization of spectrum and spatially flexible optical networks and at the end of the presentation we will highlight the latest developments around the control of such networks and the particular issues that arise during their operation. The associated challenges and future research directions for all pieces of the “flexible networking puzzle” will be revealed.


About Presenter Prof. Dr. Ioannis Tomkos

IEEE ComSoc Regional Webinar SpeakerIoannis Tomkos has been with AIT since September 2002 (serving as Professor, Research Group Head and Associate Dean). He was elected “Adjunct Professor” at the College of Optical Sciences of University of Arizona (Oct 2013) and “Adjunct Faculty Research Fellow” at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Cyprus (Jan 2014). In the past, he was Adjunct Faculty member at the Information Networking Institute of Carnegie-Mellon University, USA (2002 - 2010), senior scientist (1999 - 2002) at Corning Inc., USA and Research Associate (1995 - 1999) at University of Athens, Greece. He received his B.Sc. from University of Patras (1994), his M.Sc. in Telecommunications Engineering from University of Athens (1996) and his Ph.D. in Optical Communications Systems again from University of Athens (1999).

Dr. Tomkos has represented AIT as Principal Investigator in about 25 EU and industry funded research projects (including 6 currently active projects) related with Optical Communications/Networking and Broadband Access. Together with his colleagues and students he has authored over 500 peer-reviewed archival scientific articles in journals/magazines/books (~150) and conferences/workshops (~350). His work has received over 3300 citations (increasing currently with a rate of over 650 per year) and his h-factor is 30 (as of October 2013).

He has served as the Chairman of the International Optical Networking Technical Committee of the IEEE Communications Society (2007 - 2008), the Chairman of the IFIP working group on Photonic Networking (2008 - 2009), the Chairman of the OSA Technical Group on Optical Communications (2009 - 2012) and the Chairman of the IEEE Photonics Society Greek Chapter (2010 - 2013). He is/was involved in several high-level evaluation committees (including the OSA/IEEE Tyndall Award Evaluation/Nomination Committee). He has also been involved, from various roles, in the organization of major conferences in the area of telecommunications/networking (more than 130 conferences/workshops). In addition, he is/was a member of the Editorial Boards of the IEEE/OSA JOURNAL OF LIGHTWAVE TECHNOLOGY, the IEEE/OSA JOURNAL OF OPTICAL COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKING, the IET JOURNAL ON OPTOELECTRONICS, the Springer Photonic Network Communications, and the International Journal on Telecommunications Management, while he also served as guest-editor for many special issues of high-calibre Journals (including being the Chief Editor for a 2012 centennial anniversary special issue on “The evolution of Optical Networking” for the prestigious “Proceedings of IEEE”).

Dr. Tomkos was elected Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Communications Society (2007). He was also elected a Fellow of IET (2010) and a Fellow of OSA (2012) for “outstanding contributions in the field of transparent optical networking”.

2. Αν θελετε feedback, το σημερινο εργαστηριο ηταν φειλ. Πρωτον γιατι δεν πηραμε παρουσιες, αφου ηταν εισαγωγικο και δευτερον γιατι καθομαι και σπιτι μου να διαβασω πεντε οδηγιες απο ενα pdf και να τα κανω κι εγω. Χωρις παρεξηγηση.

Την Πέμπτη 19/12/2013 δεν θα πραγματοποιηθεί μάθημα το μάθημα θεωρίας το πρωί 9.00-11.00, αντίθετα θα γίνει μάθημα το απόγευμα 15.00-17.00.

Την πρώτη ώρα του μαθήματος θα γίνει θεωρία από την κα. Παυλίδου, ενώ την δεύτερη ώρα θα γίνει ανάλυση της εργασίας προσομοίωσης.

Επίσης, μήπως μπορούμε να φέρουμε laptop/tablet για να μην τα τυπώνουμε όλα;

Επομένως τι σημαίνει το "όλα ανοιχτά" για την άσκηση; Γιατί με εξαίρεση το βιβλίο του Βενιέρη, τα υπόλοιπα που είναι μέσα στην ύλη ή πρέπει να τα εκτυπώσουμε, ή να τα βλέπουμε από οθόνη.  Θα μοιραστεί κάποιο τυπολόγιο;
