University of Manchester PhDs:

We're on the lookout for good PhD candidates in various topics such as: computer architecture, managed runtime environments, hw/sw co-design, Big Data and programming languages. If you are interested in starting a Ph.D. in these areas then please contact directly Dr. Christos Kotselidis (christos.kotselidis@manchester.ac.uk). Our work spans various projects from ASIC design/implementation, chip wearout reliability modeling, heterogeneous multicore, to managed runtime environments (Java VMs) for heterogeneous multicores incorporating GPUs and FPGAs.

The University of Manchester [1] is one of the UK’s top research-led universities boasting a proud record of excellence in research. It can lay claim to 25 Nobel Prize winners amongst its current and former staff and students, including 4 Nobel laureates, who are currently members of its staff. The University has a long and distinguished record in the fields of Computer Architecture, Computer Systems and High-Performance Parallel Computing. A number of groundbreaking developments have taken place in Manchester including the world’s first stored program computer, the invention of virtual memory, the compiler-compiler and the building of the first practical dataflow computer.

The Advanced Processor Technologies (APT) group [2] has a wide range of activities related to Computer Architecture and Systems research. APT continues to influence industry with commercialization examples such as the ICL Goldrush Database server, Amulet processors (Low-power architectures) bought by ARM Ltd., Transitive Corporation (Virtualization and Binary Translation) bought by IBM and Silistix Ltd (Networks-on-Chip).

The studentships would be in the APT group at Manchester with Mikel Lujan and Steve Furber. The studentships are fully funded (covering both tuition fees and living expenses up to £14000 per annum). Longer-term career benefits of studying at APT are demonstrated by the well-trodden path that APT group alumni have made to permanent positions within ARM, Oracle and Google.

Finally, the PhD programs can be either three or four years long and are financially supported from the School of Computer Science [3], the Center of Doctoral Training [4], or from EPSRC iCASE industrial partners such as ARM and Oracle.
