As per Digital,

We’re deeply saddened and it’s with a heavy heart we have to inform you all that our brother & friend Duncan Busto aka Spirit is in hospital in a critical condition. On Monday 13th of August he suffered a cardiac arrest and has been in a cardiothoracic unit for the past 7 days. We alongside his family have been hoping & praying for his condition to stabilise and somehow improve. This evening we we’re informed that despite the best efforts of the team at the hospital Duncan has suffered irreparable brain damage and they’re telling us all to prepare for the inevitable.

The hopelessness that we feel right now writing this statement is indescribable, we can only imagine how you all must feel reading this… but we had to let you know.

Our thoughts and prayers are with him & his family at this time.

Drum and bass veteran, Dj, producer and label owner Spirit has died.

According to social media posts by Steve Carr aka Digital and his own Facebook account, Spirit, real name Duncan Busto, suffered a cardiac arrest of August 13 and then died after a stint in the hospital trying to recover.

He got his start in the 1990’s worked in Ipswich’s Redeye Records and emerging from the same scene that produced the likes of Klute, Photek and Digital, who he was quite close to and collaborated with often.

Spirit became a full-time producer in 1997 and landed songs on Timeless and C.I.A. His Phantom Force project alongside Digital became among the leaders in the scene around 2000 and allowed him to found his own Phantom Audio label and push his own music. He never slowed down over his career, calling himself a “drum and bass lifer” in an interview with UKF last year.

Tributes have been pouring in from those across drum and bass including Andy C, Chase & Status, Noisia and more.

A TRIBUTE TO SPIRIT

Drum & bass has lost one of its strongest pillars.

On the 26th of August, Duncan Busto AKA Spirit passed away following a heart attack on August 13. One of the genre’s most consistent, uncompromised, honest, and often funniest and thoughtful characters; his unexpected passing leaves an entire genre in mourning and creates yet another hole that can never be filled.

Duncan gave everything to jungle and drum & bass and was immersed in it, contributing and amplifying the culture from its earliest roots. As a DJ since 1987 he pushed the sounds. As a buyer for Redeye Records he ensured his hometown Ipswich was supplied with the sounds. As a writer for national dance magazine Muzik he made sure the UK knew about the sounds and wanted to seek them out themselves. He entrenched himself in the culture in any way he could. He lived it.

Releases and his Spirit tag were the final piece in his personal puzzle box and landed in 1996, nine years after he’d started to DJ. The reason they came a little later in his career is perfectly indicative of his eternal G status: he didn’t want anyone else to press the buttons or engineer for him. He wanted to make the records with his own skills and his own sounds. He knew, even then, that this was his life. Rushing things or compromising was not an option: a tactic he upkept with complicit consistency.

When the tunes did start coming, they never stopped. From then until now there’s only been one year when Duncan didn’t bless our collections with multiple releases each year. Early deep soul gems on Timeless and Total Science’s CIA (a label and act with whom he remained best friends and kindred spirits with ever since) unforgiving, break-barging hurters like Underpass on Genetic Stress, 16 years of material on his own Inneractive and of course his and Digital’s unarguably influential Phantom Audio era.

A turning point for both Duncan and Steve Digital, the pair, along with allies Total Science, had debunked the ubiquitous two step and maintained jungle’s deep love for the breakbeat against the popular sound at the time. Phantom Force, a track which stills gets smashed in the mix to this day, epitomises how they stuck to their vision, forged their own sound, did their own thing and didn’t react or resort to trend. The same can be said for how he launched his label Inneractive; no one wanted to sign his track Memories. “I thought fuck it and put it out myself,” he explained in an interview with me last year. “This is an ongoing theme in my career.”

That line was delivered with his trademark infectious raw laugh that anyone who met him will know and forever recall. But for once it wasn’t a joke: Run the thread right back and everything Spirit achieved was done with his bare hands and love for the genre. Run it forward to find Underground Alliance, his latest project to provide a hub and professional platform for he and fellow artists such as Digital, Loxy, Nomine, Mantra, Double O and Blocks & Escher to manage their own bookings. A site and system he built himself for the underground community and his independent peers, it didn’t just sum up Duncan’s inherent, defiant DIY drive and refusal to play the current game… But also how motivated, driven and sharp his was right until the end.

The last two times I saw Duncan play this year also summed how much he loved the music and his craft and also his scope, skills and musical depth: a 90-92 set at Rupture and a b2b with Digital in a dank basement in Cardiff. The former was a lesson in raw roots as he hurled out cult releases on labels such as Production House Records, Ibiza Records and Reinforced, bouncing up and down more than the needles on 12”s he’d spent the previous week nerding out over and cleaning up ready for the gig (all the while feeding a local fox who’d been paying him visits)..

The latter, just months ago, was Spirit in his natural stomping ground, sparring with his system soulmate; Digital bulldozing the crowd with his steamroller system melters, Spirit picking them back off the ground again and slapping them senseless with unforgiving rollers and sharp shards of emotion. They played for two hours in a dark, low ceiling, intimate regional club. Eye level with an intimate headsy crowd; not dissimilar to the type of venues where Duncan and Digital honed their Phantom Audio sound both in their native Ipswich and Oxford during the time they connected with Total Science.

From the foundations to the forefront of today’s still thriving underground drum & bass culture, Duncan was at home and totally in tune with the music: he knew what to draw for, when to draw for it and exactly how hard it would hit you. And he did it with total relevancy and authenticity.

“I have to be realistic, I’m often DJing to people who weren’t even born when I put out my first release,” he joked in our interview. “If you’re loving what you’re doing and staying true to what you do then that doesn’t matter. People on the dancefloor don’t give a shit when you were born or how long you’ve been around. They just want the best possible set you can give them. In this sense I’m a DJ more than I am a producer and have stayed relevant with the selections I play. Plus any way I’m a lifer… What else am I going to do?”

Those bittersweet words are too hard to swallow now. Duncan did devote his life to drum & bass in every possible way and always on his own terms. This is something I was lucky to witness first hand through knowing him for the last 18 months but it’s something that his closest friends, family and loved ones have known forever. My heart hurts with thoughts and love for everyone who is missing him, everyone who he made music with, played with, looked out of, helped and made laugh. The amount of pictures and stories being shared on social media since his condition has been a reminder at how many people he touched and inspired.

One of the last conversations I had with Duncan was last month. He joked I had ‘played it too safe’ on a feature about dubplate culture and that I should have called people out. So out of respect, his tribute will end like this…. If you’re involved in something creative and you’ve decided to make that your career and you’re not investing every ounce of your soul and your energy and focus to it, then you’re in the wrong job. If you’re not prepared for the longest of games and to weather the challenging lows or stay true to what you want to do, then leave now. If you’re jumping on trends, biting on other people’s style or spending more time shouting about what you’re doing than actually doing it, go now. If you’re in the field for narcissistic or egotistical reasons or any other motive other than the drive to create, make your own personal mark and push things forward, then politely f*!k off. Compromise is not an option; you’re either fully into what you do or you’re just wasting time.

The scene doesn’t just need more of Duncan’s spirit, all walks of life do. Have a passion, stick to it, make it happen, fight for it when you have to but most of all love it and live it. Duncan, you, your music and your actions will never ever be forgotten. Thank you for everything. Rest In Peace.

Um ano depois, o brasileiro recebia em Londres o título de "Melhor DJ iniciante" segundo os críticos ingleses.

Foi no mesmo ano de 98 que Patife deu um dos passos mais importantes de sua carreira, quando, em Londres, conseguiu um contrato de representação das noites de drum & bass Movement no Brasil. What Evil Lurks is an EP by English band the Prodigy. The 12" vinyl record was released in a limited number in February 1991,selling around 7,000 copies. The title track sampled the introduction to the 1930s American radio show about adventure hero The Shadow, "What evil lurks in the heart of men?" The four songs were part of the 10-track demo Liam Howlett sent to XL Recordings when he was attempting to obtain a record deal. Before "What Evil Lurks" had released, "Android" got an early release in November 1990 and it was released on the expanded version of Experience. The original version of "Everybody in the Place" is featured on the record and is different from the eventual "Fairground Version" on the single with the same name.

The EP was re-issued in a limited edition on 27 September 2004, to celebrate the 15th anniversary of XL Recordings. In the Netherlands "Android" was at that time the floorfiller, so local version had it as an a-side with "Everybody In The Place" while "What Evil Lurks" and "We Gonna Rock" were both b-side.

In 1997, Orbital re-recorded Satan with Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett, for the Spawn movie soundtrack.[2] (Metallica also featured on the soundtrack, in a collaboration with DJ Spooky)

In 2015, Paul Hartnoll shared a 4 track demo version of Belfast from 1990 on his blog, along with "The Other One", an unfinished demo made with elements of Chime and Belfast.[3]

Orbital’s ‘Belfast’ was released on this day 30 years ago



On this day in 1991 (7 January), Orbital released the III EP [ https://www.discogs.com/Orbital-III/release/73016 ], the group’s third single, which contained the blissful masterpiece Belfast on its B-side.

The story of how the track came to such a quintessential part of the Hartnoll brothers’ catalogue is the stuff of legend – having been booked to play Belfast Art College in May 1990, David Holmes and Alan Simms ‘discovered’ the track on a discarded demo tape left behind by the band.

A few years back, Paul Hartnoll (check out our 2018 interview with him here) revealed that during a rummage through some old DATs and four-track tape recordings, he had uncovered the original version of Belfast, heretofore imagined lost forever.

As you can hear below, it contains many of the lush features evident in the final version (including the ‘slowed down’ finale) albeit missing the ethereal vocal segment – more on that later.

“I’ve been trying to remember exactly when I recorded it [Belfast],” Paul wrote on his blog. “It comes from the era between my first ever release on the House Sound of London, under the name ‘DS Building Contractors’ and buying our first Orbital DAT after getting a proper record deal with Pete Tong at FFRR.

“I know it was recorded after Chime because the track on the tape before it is a more typical house track that has elements of Chime and Belfast in it.”

As he surmises, some time during the winter of 1989/90, having “finished an early shift at Pizza Piazza” in his native Sevenoaks, Paul sat down to write what would become Belfast.

“I decided to make an ambient song,” he explained. “It was a rainy melancholy mid-week kind of afternoon. I got the chords first and just went from there. Got it all in place as a drumless ambient piece, but I just couldn’t resist the call of the 909 drum machine. So in went the drums. Much better! So ,what you hear here is the jam I did on a rainy afternoon, after work and before catching up with my friends for the evening. At the time I remember thinking it was ok, but I wasn’t over impressed.”

This is when the story gets interesting…

“Months later, after the success of Chime in March 1990, I got a call from David Holmes, DJ, club runner and hair dresser from Belfast. Would Orbital like to play at the Art College in Belfast? Yes!

“So, after the gig, in Davids Mum’s house’s spare bedroom, David asked if we had any demos. Two weeks later, David rings up and tells me that him and his friends all love the second track on the tape. We called it Belfast after the brilliant time we had there. The track was named after, and dedicated to David and all his friends.”

Brother Phil Hartnoll recently repeated the same story to the BBC, in an interview to coincide with the duo’s One Big Weekend gig in the Northern Irish capital.

“We left David with a tape, with a demo of Belfast, as it is now known,” he explained. “We had such a brilliant time, we completely loved it, and we thought ‘ok, because of the experience we had, it’s a beautiful track, we’ve got to call it Belfast.”

And as for the hypnotic vocals? As it turns out, they predate the city of Belfast itself.

They are taken from O Euchari, a vocal composition by Hildegard von Bingen, also known as the Sibyl of the Rhine, who plied her trade back in 12th century Germany. The version in question was performed by soprano Emily van Evera.

“When we were making the Orbital III EP, we decided to put a version of Belfast on it,” Paul wrote on his blog. “While I was re-recording it with all the lovely new gear we had bought from the record deal, Phil was making a birthing tape for the imminent arrival of his second child. He was at my Dad’s hi-fi with the headphones on, while I was at the computer and sampler playing through the track.

“He popped the head phones off and said ‘listen to this, it sounds brilliant’. So, he turned the speakers up and hey presto! Hildegard von Bingen’s O Euchari burst through, in tune, in time, Job done!”

Originally recorded by Emily in the 80s for Hyperion Records. Then sampled by the Beloved. Then sampled by Orbital. Just in case anyone wants to argue the chronology. The Beloved credit Emily on the sleeve notes of their 2nd album "Happiness" which it appears.

Hildegard of Bingen (German: Hildegard von Bingen; Latin: Hildegardis Bingensis; c. 1098 – 17 September 1179), also known as Saint Hildegard and the Sibyl of the Rhine, was a German Benedictine abbess and polymath active as a writer, composer, philosopher, mystic, visionary, and as a medical writer and practitioner during the High Middle Ages.[1][2] She is one of the best-known composers of sacred monophony, as well as the most recorded in modern history.[3] She has been considered by many in Europe to be the founder of scientific natural history in Germany.[4]

Hildegard's convent elected her as magistra (mother superior) in 1136. She founded the monasteries of Rupertsberg in 1150 and Eibingen in 1165. Hildegard wrote theological, botanical, and medicinal works,[5] as well as letters, hymns and antiphons for the liturgy.[2] Furthermore, she wrote poems, while supervising miniature illuminations in the Rupertsberg manuscript of her first work, Scivias.[6] There are more surviving chants by Hildegard than by any other composer from the entire Middle Ages, and she is one of the few known composers to have written both the music and the words.[7] One of her works, the Ordo Virtutum, is an early example of liturgical drama and arguably the oldest surviving morality play.[a] She is also noted for the invention of a constructed language known as Lingua Ignota.

Although the history of her formal canonization is complicated, regional calendars of the Roman Catholic church have listed her as a saint for centuries. On 10 May 2012, Pope Benedict XVI extended the liturgical cult of Hildegard to the entire Catholic Church in a process known as "equivalent canonization". On 7 October 2012, he named her a Doctor of the Church, in recognition of "her holiness of life and the originality of her teaching."[8]
