"Chime" is the first single from the British electronic group Orbital. It was originally recorded on cassette tape and allegedly cost less than £1 to produce. The track was originally released in December 1989 and was a big underground success. In 1990, it had a wider release on FFRR Records, and reached number 17 on the UK Singles Chart.[1]

The track has been referred to as the British equivalent to Derrick May's seminal classic "Strings of Life"[2] and was included at number 11 on Mixmag magazine's 100 Greatest Dance Singles of All Time.[3] Mixmag also included it on two "best ever dance" compilations, B!g Tunes: The Greatest Dance Singles of All Time (2001) and The Greatest Dance Tracks of All Time (2013).

Creation
According to Paul Hartnoll, the track was recorded in Orbital's "under the stairs" home studio – "a knocked-through stair cupboard that my dad set up as a home office" in Sevenoaks, Kent. Key amongst the band's equipment at this time was their Roland TB-303 synthesiser which had been acquired for £100 from a northern working men's club keyboard player who was living in London.[4]

Paul stated that he recorded "Chime" in the home studio before he went down to the pub. He played the cassette to pirate DJ Jazzy M at his record store in London. The DJ loved the track but insisted that it be extended for another couple of minutes. The tape recorder they recorded the track onto ran too fast, resulting in it being slightly slower than intended when played back on other decks. The track ended being 12 mins 40 after largely reprising the first half and improvising with the drum machine and TB-303 synth.[5] The B-side of the record was the track "Deeper", featuring samples from a spoken-word relaxation record.

The original pressing (the first on Jazzy M's Oh'Zone records) of 1,000 records sold out quickly. Record labels clamoured to give "Chime" a full release and in the end they went with Pete Tong's FFRR record label. An edited version was produced and created in a more professional studio. It was downsized using fewer elements from the original 12-inch version, shortening it to 3 minutes and 14 seconds.[5]

Top of the Pops
The track made the Top 40 of the British charts and Orbital made their first TV appearance performing live on BBC TV's Top of the Pops show in March 1990. They appeared wearing Anti-Poll Tax T-shirts. The brothers wanted to play live but the show's producers stated that they had to mime. The band were embarrassed about having to do so and thought that the dancer they were provided with was also bored. They stood around on stage and did not even pretend to mime. The show's production staff did not invite Orbital back on for another six years.[6] After the appearance the tune went six places up the chart to number 17.

Although not their highest-charting song; four other Orbital songs have reached higher positions, it was the song that brought them to a mainstream audience.

How we made Orbital's Chime
The Hartnoll brothers reveal how their rave anthem was created for £3.75 in a cupboard under the stairs at their parents’ house

We made all our early music at our parents’ house in a cupboard under the stairs, just like Harry Potter. Each time we got a new synthesiser or sequencer, we’d be like little kids unwrapping a Christmas present. One of us would discover a new sound and the other would go: “That’s brilliant. Turn the knob!”

Paul was in charge of things like whether a song lasted a minute or an hour, and I made all the squelching noises. Initially, we’d been trying to copy New Order and Donna Summer. We were going to clubs when they were still called discos, but then someone came in with a tape and said: “This is the new music, it’s called ‘house!’” And we loved it straight away. Before we knew it, we had our own collection of house-y songs.

We called ourselves Orbital after the M25, the ring road around London that ferried people to illegal raves. But I never actually drove round it myself. I preferred going to the Mutoid Waste Company parties in central London. Five quid in, acid house all night and people dressed like something from Mad Max. They’d have giant sculptures, like a weeping willow made out of metal shards, with pools of fire everywhere. You’d never get away with it now, because of health and safety, but it was amazing.

When Jazzy M, a pirate radio DJ and record shop owner, played Chime to a load of other DJs in his shop one night, apparently they all put their hands up, wanting vinyl copies. He had to explain that there weren’t any – it was just on a cassette. But that started the initial buzz.

I was in a garage band called Noddy and the Satellites. It was very easy to drift away and do something else. I’d seen Gary Numan performing Are “Friends” Electric? on Top of the Pops, but I only really got into electronics when Phil bought himself a drum machine. I got myself a synthesiser and came up with the basis of Chime in a spare two hours between finishing work washing dishes and going to the pub.

I was trying to pair a four-track recorder with my dad’s two-track cassette recorder to make a six-track studio. This meant I had to come up with six different sounds or melodies to play simultaneously. I certainly wasn’t trying to make a hit record. The recording costs were £3.75, which was the price of a “metal” cassette tape.

When some of the local soul boys played our stuff to Jazzy M, I was summoned to meet him at his record shop in Croydon. He was a proper evangelist in terms of getting house music off the ground in the UK and was always telling us: “Make music like this. Then come back.” As soon as he heard Chime, he decided to start a label, calling it Ohzone. We sold 2,000 records then six major labels came after us and we signed to London Records. Their A&R man, Pete Tong, bought records from Jazzy’s shop.

At first, nobody knew what to make of us. One review said Chime sounded like a fridge – but at 22, you just think: “Fuck off, grandad!” When we started gigging, we’d play somewhere like [experimental music club] Oscillate in Birmingham and the audience reacted like we were the second coming of Christ.

Acid house was so new that we were all enthusiastic amateurs, making it up as we went along. Our phone number was written on the label in the middle of our record so we’d get calls from people like David Holmes in Belfast. He became a pivotal figure in British dance music, but when he called us to ask us to play in his home town he was still a hairdresser living with his mum.

The Gift (Way Out West song)

"The Gift" is a song by English electronic music duo Way Out West featuring English singer Joanna Law, credited as Miss Joanna Law.[1] It was released on the since defunct record label Deconstruction Records on 2 September 1996. The song reached #15 on the UK Singles Chart that year, and also peaked at #2 on the UK Dance Chart.[2] It is the third single from their eponymous debut studio album Way Out West.[3]

Background
The song uses a sample from Joanna Law's cover of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", titled "First Time Ever".[4] After its release, a music video for the song was also filmed.[5] The song has been featured on many compilation albums, including Judge Jules' Trance Nation Anthems on Ministry of Sound.[6]

"The Gift" received a 2010 update when Deconstruction re-released the song with additional remixes by Gui Boratto, Michael Woods, Tek-One and Way Out West themselves. The group's own remix of the song featured on their 2010 remix album, We Love Machine – The Remixes.[7]

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a 1957 folk song written by British political singer/songwriter Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger, who later became his wife. At the time, the couple were lovers, although MacColl was still married to his second wife, Jean Newlove. Seeger sang the song when the duo performed in folk clubs around Britain. During the 1960s, it was recorded by various folk singers and became a major international hit for Roberta Flack in 1972, winning Grammy Awards for Record of the Year[1] and Song of the Year. Billboard ranked it as the number one Hot 100 single of the year for 1972.[2]
