In case you have paid directly to SkyEurope in other means than credit card (e.g. bank transfer, cash), please be advised that a refund may not be possible.

If you have ordered your flight tickets via a travel agency or organizer, you should discuss the matter with them first.

If you are already at the destination or have rented a car through SkyEurope's business partner, you may stay at the hotel and use the vehicle during the period originally agreed. You must, however, order a return flight from some other airline at your own expense.

You may also wish to contact your insurance provider to seek further guidance and support.

Low cost airline SkyEurope goes bankrupt


BRATISLAVA, Slovakia

SkyEurope Airline AS, a Central European discount airline, said Tuesday it has filed for bankruptcy and that all its flights, sales and operations have been suspended immediately.

The company cited the "lack of sufficient interim funding to finance ongoing operations."

Trading in the company's stock was suspended from the start of trading on Tuesday, a statement from the Vienna Stock Exchange said.

The troubled airline obtained credit protection in Slovakia in June. It reported a loss of close to euro60 million ($85.63 million) in the 2007-2008 business year, with a turnover of euro260.9 million ($372.36 million).

SkyEurope was founded in 2001 and began operations in February 2002. It has not been profitable since. It operates services to more than 20 European cities from bases in Bratislava, Vienna and Prague.

Vienna international airport stopped servicing departing SkyEurope flights in the mid-August because the airline failed to meet a deadline for paying outstanding debts and the airline was forced to operate those flights from nearby Bratislava.

Prague's airport announced it would not service SkyEurope flights starting Tuesday if it fails to pay its debts.

SkyEurope spokesman Tomas Kika was not immediately available for comment.

Last month, the Web site of the Czech daily Mlada Fronta Dnes reported the company had asked employees to accept being paid only a week of their July wages -- with the rest to be paid out in 15 days -- and warned that it would be forced to stop operations if the majority turned down the request. The employees reportedly agreed.

The airline advised passengers who paid for flights with a credit card to seek refunds at their credit card issuing banks. It said passengers have to purchase return flights from other airlines.

Χιλιάδες επιβάτες της αεροπορικής εταιρείας SkyEurope βρίσκονται σήμερα αποκλεισμένοι σχεδόν σε όλη την Ευρώπη, μετά την ανακοίνωση της χρεοκοπίας της εταιρείας αυτής χαμηλού κόστους και τη ματαίωση όλων των πτήσεών της χθες, Δευτέρα, το βράδυ, σύμφωνα με τον εκπρόσωπο της εταιρείας Ρόλαντ Σραντζ.

Ο ίδιος εξέφρασε τη λύπη του για το γεγονός ότι η εταιρεία δεν μπορεί να λάβει κάποιο μέτρο για την επιστροφή των επιβατών της στις χώρες τους. "Μια αεροπορική εταιρεία που χρεοκοπεί δεν μπορεί να διαπραγματευθεί συμφωνίες", αιτιολογήθηκε, σε ερώτηση που του υπεβλήθη από το αυστριακό πρακτορείο ειδήσεων APA.

Ωστόσο οι Αυστριακές Αερογραμμές (Austrian Airlines) πρότειναν στους επιβάτες της SkyEurope που έχουν αποκλειστεί τη μεταφορά τους στη Βιένη έναντι του συμβολικού ποσού των 150 ευρώ.

Η προσφορά αυτή ισχύει για τους προορισμούς που εξυπηρετεί και η Austrian Airlines: Άμστερνταμ, Αθήνα, Βαρκελώνη, Βρυξέλλες, Βουκουρέστι, Ντουμπρόβνικ, Λάρνακα, Νίκαια, Παρίσι, Σόφια και Σπλιτ.

Πριν από την πτώχευσή της, η SkyEurope είχε ήδη ακυρώσει χθες τις πτήσεις της που αναχωρούσαν από τα αεροδρόμια της Μπρατισλάβα και της Πράγας.

Η εταιρεία αυτή, η οποία ιδρύθηκε το 2001 από αυστριακούς επενδυτές, δεν κατέγραψε ποτέ κέρδη στα 6 χρόνια της λειτουργίας της. Εξυπηρετούσε περίπου 30 προορισμούς με πτήσεις της από τη Μπρατισλάβα, την Πράγα και τη Βιένη.
