Osamai Hitomi, a Japanese businessman was lured to Johannesburg, South Africa in a 419 scam and kidnapped on 26 September 2008. The kidnappers took him to Alberton, south of Johannesburg and demanded a $5 million ransom from his family. Seven people were arrested.[55]
On 23 September 2008, a Kenth Sadaaki Suzuki, a Swedish businessman, was lured to South Africa and kidnapped. He was taken to a house in Rosettenville in Johannesburg and robbed of all his belongings. Thereafter a ransom of €20,000 was demanded from his family. Two people were arrested. They are also linked to the kidnappings of three American Citizens and possibly other similar cases[56]
On 2 June 1996 in Lomé, Togo, 419ing kidnappers held a Swedish businessman for $500,000. Swedish police and the kidnappers negotiated before the kidnappers released the man on 12 June 1996.[30]
From September 1995 to April 1997, conmen held at least eight Americans against their will. In 1996 the embassy repatriated ten Americans who fell victim to 419 schemes.[30]
Joseph Raca, a former mayor of Northampton, England, was kidnapped by scammers in Johannesburg, South Africa in July 2001. The captors released Raca after they became nervous.[57]
Dănuţ Tetrescu, a Romanian who flew from Bucharest to Johannesburg to meet with con men in the Soweto area of Johannesburg, was kidnapped in 1999 and held for $500,000.[58]

Important:
We are sending you this letter in connection with new directions issued by U.S. Treasury Department. The directions concern U.S. Federal Wire online payments.

On December 2, 2009 a large-scale phishing attack started and has been still going on. A great number of banks and credit unions is affected by this attack and quantity of illegal wire transfers has reached an extremely high level.

U.S. Treasury Department, Federal Reserve and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) in common worked out a complex of immediate actions for the highest possible reduction of fraudulent operations. We regret to inform you that definite restrictions will be applied to all Federal Wire transfers from December 8 till December 18.

Η Microsoft κέρδισε μία δικαστική διαμάχη για το κλείσιμο ενός δικτύου υπολογιστών που η εταιρία θεωρεί υπεύθυνο για 1.5 δισεκατομμύρια spam μηνύματα κάθε μέρα!
Αμερικάνικο δικαστήριο αποφάσισε να διατάξει το σταμάτημα 277 domains που χρησιμοποιούνται για τον έλεγχο ενός δικτύου υπολογιστών (botnet) με τον όνομα Waledac.
Το botnet είναι ένα σύνολο μολυσμένων υπολογιστών που βρίσκονται υπό τις εντολές των hackers που τους ελέγχουν.

Η Microsoft αναφέρει ότι με το κλείσιμο αυτών των domains, περισσότεροι από 90.000 υπολογιστές θα σταματήσουν να λαμβάνουν εντολές για αποστολή μηνυμάτων spam.

Σύμφωνα με πρόσφατη ανάλυση της Microsoft βρέθηκε ότι μεταξύ 3-21 Δεκεμβρίου περίπου 651 εκατομμύρια spam emails στάλθηκαν μέσω του Waledac μόνο στους λογαριασμούς Hotmail.
