Yes, it's true.

News reached the press today in Sweden - The Pirate Bay might get aquired by Global Gaming Factory X AB.

A lot of people are worried. We're not and you shouldn't be either!

TPB is being sold for a great bit underneath it's value if the money would be the interesting part. It's not. The interesting thing is that the right people with the right attitude and possibilities keep running the site.
As all of you know, there's not been much news on the site for the past two-three years. It's the same site essentially. On the internets, stuff dies if it doesn't evolve. We don't want that to happen.

We've been working on this project for many years. It's time to invite more people into the project, in a way that is secure and safe for everybody. We need that, or the site will die. And letting TPB die is the last thing that is allowed to happen!

If the new owners will screw around with the site, nobody will keep using it. That's the biggest insurance one can have that the site will be run in the way that we all want to. And - you can now not only share files but shares with people. Everybody can indeed be the owner of The Pirate Bay now. That's awesome and will take the heat of us.

The old crew is still around in different ways. We will also not stop being active in the politics of the internets - quite the opposite. Now we're fueling up for going into the next gear. TPB will have economical muscles to let people evolve it. It will team up with great technicians to evolve the protocols. And we, the people interested in more than just technology, will have the time to focus on that. It's win-win-win.

The profits from the sale will go into a foundation that is going to help with projects about freedom of speech, freedom of information and the openess of the nets. I hope everybody will help out in that and realize that this is the best option for all. Don't worry - be happy!

The listed software company, Global Gaming Factory X AB (publ) (GGF) acquires The Pirate Bay website, http://www.thepiratebay.org, one of the 100 most visited websites in the world and the technology company Peerialism, that has developed next generation file-sharing technology. Following the completion of the acquisitions, GGF intends to launch new business models that allow compensation to the content providers and copyright owners. The responsibility for, and operation of the site will be taken over by GGF in connection with closing of the transaction, which is scheduled for August 2009.

"We would like to introduce models which entail that content providers and copyright owners get paid for content that is downloaded via the site" said Hans Pandeya, CEO GGF.

"The Pirate Bay is a site that is among the top 100 most visited Internet sites in the world. "ΓΑΜΗΜΕΝΑ ΠΟΝΤΙΚΙΑ, ΠΟΥΛΗΤΑΡΙΑ ΤΩΝ ΕΤΑΙΡΙΩΝ!" ωρύονται οι χρήστες του Pirate Bay. Περίπου χίλια σχόλια αναρτήθηκαν στο blog του Pirate Bay την πρώτη μέρα που ανακοινώθηκαν τα νέα [και αρκετές χιλιάδες τις επόμενες μέρες], και περίπου 90-95% από αυτά ήταν γεμάτα λύπη ή οργή για το υποτιθέμενο ξεπούλημα. Μερικοί mainstream σχολιαστές στη Σουηδία, από την άλλη, χαιρέτισαν την κίνηση σαν ένα βήμα προς την εγκατάλειψη της ψηφιακής πειρατείας.

Έχουμε συνηθίσει να φανταζόμαστε το Pirate Bay σαν μια θρυλική οντότητα που διεξάγει μια επική μάχη, για λογαριασμό των εκατομμυρίων ανθρώπων που διαμοιράζονται αρχεία. Όμως, δεν είναι ακριβώς μια θρυλική οντότητα αυτό που πρόκειται να πουληθεί. Είναι κάτι διαφορετικό. Τι θα πουληθεί λοιπόν;

Το "Pirate Bay" είναι σήμερα, μεταξύ άλλων:
*Ένα domain name [www.piratebay.org]
*Ένας ιστότοπος
*Μια επιχείρηση που προωθεί διαφημίσεις
*Ένα μπλογκ
*Ο μεγαλύτερος bittorrent tracker του κόσμου
*Ένα μαγαζί με ρούχα [t-shirts και αναμνηστικά του Pirate Bay]
*Τρία άτομα
*Ένα σμήνος [swarm] διαμοιραστών
*Ένα σύμβολο

Το Pirate Bay πρέπει να οριστεί σαν το σύνολο που προκύπτει από τη συναρμολόγηση όλων αυτών των πραγμάτων. Οποιοδήποτε από τα παραπάνω κομμάτια του θα ήταν, μόνο του, ανίσχυρο. Μόνο μέσω των διασυνδέσεών της, το σύνολο γίνεται τόσο δυνατό. Όμως, δεν χρειάζονται πάντα όλα τα κομμάτια. Δυο είναι αρκετά για να διαμοιράζονται τα αρχεία: ένα σμήνος διαμοιραστών και ένας tracker που να τους συνδέει μεταξύ τους.

Πολλοί διαμοιραστές χρησιμοποιούν τον tracker του Pirate Bay χωρίς καν να επισκέπτονται τον ιστότοπο. Άλλοι ιστότοποι, που παρέχουν υπηρεσίες indexing [καταγραφής και αναζήτησης των torrents που είναι διαθέσιμα στο διαδίκτυο], όπως η Mininova, χρησιμοποιούν τον tracker του Pirate Bay. Από τεχνική άποψη, η ιστοσελίδα του Pirate Bay ήταν πάντα μάλλον μη απαραίτητη. Αλλά η ιστοσελίδα είναι μια πλατφόρμα που ενώνει δυο άλλα κομμάτια: το εμπορικό κομμάτι των διαφημίσεων, που είναι απαραίτητες για να χρηματοδοτείται το μεγάλο κόστος σε bandwidth και hardware, και το πολιτικό κομμάτι, που αφορά τη σύνδεση με άλλα σχετικά projects και τη σποραδική έκδοση αναρτήσεων στο blog.

Αυτό το σύνολο τώρα αποσυναρμολογείται και επανασυναρμολογείται, με τον ένα τρόπο ή τον άλλο. Αυτό είναι κάτι διαφορετικό από το "ξεπούλημα" όλων των κομματιών του Pirate Bay. Όλες οι πτυχές της υπόθεσης δεν έχουν ξεκαθαριστεί ακόμα, αλλά για να καθαρίσουμε λίγο την εικόνα, θα πρέπει πρώτα να δούμε το κάθε κομμάτι ξεχωριστά, και να κάνουμε τρεις απλές ερωτήσεις: 1) Μπορεί να αποτελέσει ιδιοκτησία κάποιου; 2) Μπορεί να πουληθεί; 3) Μπορεί να αντιγραφεί;

Το domain name, www.piratebay.org, είναι σίγουρα μέρος της συμφωνίας. Μπορεί να αποτελέσει ιδιοκτησία και να πουληθεί, αλλά όχι να αντιγραφεί, δεδομένου του σημερινού καθεστώτος των DNS [των διευθύνσεων δηλαδή στο διαδίκτυο: το καθεστώς ορίζει ότι κάθε domain name είναι μοναδικό]. Η ιστοσελίδα όπου κατευθύνεται ο επισκέπτης του domain μπορούμε να πούμε ότι μπορεί να αποτελέσει ιδιοκτησία, με την έννοια ότι ο οποιοσδήποτε νέος ιδιοκτήτης μπορεί να αλλάξει τα περιεχόμενά της. Αλλά μπορεί και να αντιγραφεί, πράγμα που σημαίνει ότι η "αυθεντική" έκδοση μπορεί να σκάσει μύτη σε διαφορετικό domain name. Για την ακρίβεια, είναι πολύ εύκολο να αντιγραφεί. Ολόκληρο το Pirate Bay, μαζί με το λογισμικό και κάθε torrent file [τα αρχεία που χρησιμοποιεί ο tracker για να συντονίσει τον διαμοιρασμό, όχι τα αρχεία που διαμοιράζονται π.χ. ταινίες], μπορούν να χωρέσουν σε ένα USB φλασάκι. Οι διαφημίσεις έχουν αξία μόνο όσο οι άνθρωποι επισκέπτονται τον ιστότοπο (και δεν ξέρουν πώς να χρησιμοποιήσουν το Adblock [plugin για τον Firefox που μπλοκάρει τις διαφημίσεις, https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1865/]). Το μπλογκ αφορά την προσωπική δραστηριότητα των τριών ατόμων που σχετίζονται με το Pirate Bay, και μπορεί να φιλοξενηθεί οπουδήποτε.

Τα τρία άτομα (οι Peter Sunde, Fredrik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg) παρουσιάζουν ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον, καθώς σίγουρα δεν μπορούν να αντιγραφούν. Μπορούν όμως να γίνουν ιδιοκτησία και να πουληθούν; Ναι, θεωρητικά. Σε προηγούμενες περιπτώσεις "P2P ξεπουλημάτων" [peer to peer sellouts, παρόμοιες υποθέσεις όπου ιστότοποι και υπηρεσίες που αφορούσαν διαμοιρασμό μυνήθηκαν ή αναγκάστηκαν να κλείσουν/πουληθούν], άτομα έχουν υπογράψει συμβόλαια που περιορίζουν τη μελλοντική τους ενασχόληση σε άλλα projects. Αυτό όμως δεν ισχύει εδώ. Το τρίο είναι ελεύθερο να κάνει ότι θέλει, μεταξύ άλλων πολιτικό ακτιβισμό κι ακόμα ακριβή αντίγραφα του Pirate Bay. Ο tracker αποτελείται από hardware και λογισμικό (ανοικτού κώδικα), και είναι δυνατό να αντιγραφεί αλλά όχι να συντηρηθεί χωρίς χρηματοδότηση. Αυτό το κομμάτι δεν αποτελεί μέρος της συμφωνίας εξαγοράς. Αντί να πουληθεί, ο tracker θα μεταφερθεί σε μια ξεχωριστή οντότητα, που θα παρέχει την υπηρεσία ελεύθερα σε όποιον index θέλει να τη χρησιμοποιήσει, και θεωρητικά δεν θα περιέχει καν πληροφορίες για τα αρχεία στα οποία θα κάνει tracking. Ουσιαστικά αυτό αποτελεί ένα μικρό βήμα προς την αποκέντρωση της υποδομής του διαμοιρασμού. Επίσης πιθανόν τινάζει στον αέρα όλο το αιτιολογικό της κατηγορίας που αντιμετώπισε το Pirate Bay στο δικαστήριο [ότι δηλαδή γνώριζε ότι διακινείται υλικό που προστατευόταν από πνευματικά δικαιώματα και δεν έκανε κάτι για αυτό, κι ότι το tracking αποτελεί συνέργεια σε παράνομη πράξη]. Τα ερωτήματα σχετικά με τη χρηματοδότηση και τον έλεγχο αυτού του καινούργιου, ξεχωριστού tracker θα πρέπει να απαντηθούν. Πάντως, δεν θα πρέπει να υποτεθεί ότι ο έλεγχος περνά στους αγοραστές του Pirate Bay.

Το σμήνος των εκατομμυρίων ανθρώπων και μηχανημάτων που διαμοιράζουν αρχεία δεν μπορεί ούτε να αποτελέσει ιδιοκτησία, ούτε να πουληθεί, ούτε να αντιγραφεί. Μπορεί, βέβαια, να ξεγελαστεί. Συνήθως, σε αυτό αποσκοπούν οι υποθέσεις "P2P ξεπουλημάτων", χωρίς πολλή επιτυχία [για παράδειγμα το napster, που ξεκίνησε να χρεώνει το κατέβασμα μετά την πώλησή του]. Αυτή τη φορά, οι πιθανότητες το σμήνος να συνεχίσει να χρησιμοποιεί μια υπηρεσία που θα άρχιζε να φιλτράρει τα torrents ή να χρεώνει το κατέβασμα, είναι ακόμα μικρότερες. Η παράδοση αυστηρών αρχών του Pirate Bay έχει μάθει τον κόσμο να βλέπει με δυσπιστία ακόμα και τους μικρούς περιορισμούς. Αν εφαρμοστούν τέτοιοι, το σμήνος είναι έτοιμο να μεταφερθεί αλλού. Πάντως, τίποτα σε αυτό το σημείο (εκτός από κάποιες αόριστες διατυπώσεις σε ένα δελτίο τύπου της εταιρίας που θα αγοράσει το Pirate Bay) δεν δείχνει ότι υπάρχουν τέτοια σχέδια.

Το (οπτικό και ιδεολογικό) σύμβολο "The Pirate Bay", τέλος, μεταμορφώνεται ριζικά με την πράξη της πώλησης του Pirate Bay. Αυτό δεν σημαίνει πραγματικά ότι το σύμβολο μπορεί να πουληθεί. Σημαίνει μάλλον, ότι οποιαδήποτε προσπάθεια από τον ιδιοκτήτη του domain name να αλλάξει αυτά τα οποία εκπροσωπεί το σύμβολο, θα σήμαινε ότι το σύμβολο διαλύεται [dissolving, όπως περίπου διαλύεται π.χ. η ζάχαρη στο νερό], και πως ότι σχετίζεται με αυτό επανα-προβάλλεται σε πολλά άλλα σύμβολα. Αυτό θα μπορούσε να έχει ενδιαφέροντα αποτελέσματα. Ακόμα κι αν το Pirate Bay και τα σχετικά με αυτό projects μπόρεσαν να χρησιμοποιήσουν τη δύναμη ενός μοναδικού συμβόλου, υπάρχει ωστόσο παράλληλα και η συνειδητοποίηση των προβλημάτων που προκαλεί το ολιγοπώλιο του Pirate Bay.

Το File sharing, ο διαμοιρασμός αρχείων, ποτέ δεν είχε να κάνει με το να αράζεις και να αφήνεις άλλους να κάνουν τη δουλειά. Η πράξη πώλησης του Pirate Bay (που στην πραγματικότητα σημαίνει την πώληση μερικών εξαρτημάτων ενός μεγαλύτερου συνόλου) θα μπορούσε να λειτουργήσει ως εγερτήριο. Στην ιδανική περίπτωση, η οργή κάποιων χρηστών θα μετασχηματιστεί σε δράση, ώστε περισσότερες ιστοσελίδες που κάνουν indexing σε bittorrents, ίσως ακόμα και trackers, θα στηθούν. Αυτό θα σήμαινε ότι το Pirate Bay, επιτέλους και με τρόπο παράδοξο, πετυχαίνει το στόχο του, που είναι να αντιγραφεί. Το Pirate Bay ποτέ δεν ζήτησε να είναι ο μοναδικός αντιπρόσωπος του file sharing. Όταν μεγάλα τμήματα της παγκόσμιας κίνησης στο διαδίκτυο εξαρτώνται από το αν ο Fredrik είναι λιάρδα ή όχι και μπορεί να διορθώσει ένα πρόβλημα στον server, χρειάζεται μια δραστική διαφοροποίηση για να μπορέσει να διατηρηθεί η δύναμη του peer-to-peer διαμοιρασμού αρχείων. Η διάλυση-διάχυση του κεντρικού υποκειμένου, η εγκατάλειψη ενός "σήματος κατατεθέντος" έτσι ώστε να πολλαπλασιαστεί αυτό το οποίο αντιπροσωπεύει. Αυτή είναι η σιωπηρή σχιζο-πολιτική πίσω από την πρόσφατη κίνηση του Pirate Bay.

έχει κάποια επιχειρήματα.. αλλά μου δίνει την εντύπωση με τον τρόπο που αντιμετωπίζει το θέμα ότι θα έχει επιχειρήματα με ότι και αν τελικά γίνει.

εγώ πιστεύω ότι με αυτήν την ιστορία το P2P πάει κάποια βήματα πίσω.

το σμήνος στηρίζει την βασίλισσα όταν αυτή υπάρχει.. όταν η βασίλισσα πεθάνει, αυτό θα επιλέξει απλά την επόμενη βασίλισσα.. η επιλογή αυτή δεν προωθεί την κατάσταση.. είναι απλά ένας φυσικός περιορισμός.

άρα με αυτήν την λογική θα πρέπει να αποδεχτούμε το ξεπούλημα ως φυσικό περιορισμό.. γιατί αυτός είναι ο κόσμος μας σήμερα.. τα πάντα μπορούν να εξαγοραστούν.

γιατί πάει το p2p πίσω?

αν και "ιδεολογίζει" σε ένα σημείο, που θεωρεί την κατάληξη ως "φυσική" και σαν εκπλήρωση πεπρωμένου
έχει δίκιο στο ότι ο "ξεπεσμός" του συμβόλου, δεν συνεπάγεται τίποτα απολύτως για τους peers

απλά το συγκεκριμένο σύμβολο, για 'μένα προσωπικά, είχε κάποιες κατακτήσεις τώρα τελευταία, οι οποίες έστελναν κάποιο μήνυμα.. ακόμα και σε πολιτικό επίπεδο.

πάντα θα υπάρχουν τα πνευματικά δικαιώματα.. το θέμα είναι να υπάρχει μία ισορροπία.

ίσως οι δημιουργοί του να πιστεύουν ότι εκπλήρωσαν τον στόχο τους - έστειλαν το μήνυμά τους..

δηλ. μπορεί τελικά να είμαι υπερβολικός.

σιγά το πολιτικό επίπεδο

η ελεύθερη διακίνηση πνευματικών αγαθών δεν αποτελεί πολιτική συνείδηση καθεαυτή

καθώς η απουσία στίγματος, όποτε επιλεχθεί η επέκταση προς μεγαλύτερη κοινωνική απήχηση
θα καταλήξει σε tranvestite πολιτικές

The Pirate Bay Wants Your Computing Power

When the Pirate Bay blogged that it might be in a deal to be purchased by the Global Gaming Factory in an effort to turn things legit, users cried out in concern that things would never be the same again – and they could be right.

If the Global Gaming Factory gets its way, the Pirate Bay will become a paid service backed by both recording and motion picture companies.

"We're approaching the record and movie industries, both are at the top of the list," Wayne Rosso, the latest hire by the Pirate Bay in an effort to legitimize, said in a CNet interview. "But eventually we want to talk to (anyone producing digital content)...The Pirate Bay has turned over a legitimate new leaf, so it has to be above board from the first day. That's the only way it can work."

To be clear, the Pirate Bay has every intention in becoming a paid service whereby users pay a fee for access to download media. Rosso would not give even a ballpark figure on how much the service would cost.

Of course, almost the entire Pirate Bay user base isn't accustomed to paying for things they previously were able to get for free, so Rosso proposes a business model where users can lend their computers to a cloud network.

The idea is that a user can lend a gig of storage and some computational power to be a part of a Pirate Bay cloud network that it could sell as competitors to Akamai and Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2).

"The more of your computer resources you contribute to the network, the less you pay down to zero," Rosso said. "We hope to introduce a new BitTorrent technology that will optimize ISP traffic. We can save ISPs up to 80 percent of their resources. Half of the Internet traffic is file sharing and half of that traffic is Pirate Bay."

Could it just be blind optimism? Only time will tell. All we know for sure is that the Pirate Bay will never be the same again.

Μπορώ να καταλάβω την απογοήτευση του κόσμου όταν κατέρευσε το Napster από το νομικό πόλεμο.

Τώρα πια ξέρουμε.

Το ποτάμι πίσω δεν γυρνά. κάθε κεφάλι που θα νομίζουν ότι κόβουν οι εταιρίες, θα βγάζει άλλα 3-4 πιο πονηρά.

Χωρίς να λαμβάνω θέση απέναντι στην υπεράσπιση του άρθρου προς τους ανθρώπους του pirate bay, θεωρώ ότι έχει δίκιο στα υπόλοιπα.
Όσο για την άποψη μου για αυτούς. Καλά κάναν και μοσχοπουλήσαν κάτι, που για τους "νόμιμους" θα είναι παντελώς άχρηστο.

Pirate Bay unfazed by new threats


Peter Sunde, a co-founder of high-profile file-sharing website The Pirate Bay, says new legal action against the site is nothing more than "harassment".

Thirteen Hollywood production companies filed a lawsuit on Tuesday to try to get the website shut down.

In April the site's founders were found guilty of breaking copyright law and were sentenced to a year in jail and ordered to pay $4.5m (£3m) in damages.

However, the site remains open and users can share copyrighted content.

"We have filed a complaint against The Pirate Bay because they have not stopped their activities after they were sentenced to prison," the studios' lawyer Monique Wadsted told AFP.

The lawsuit has been brought by Columbia Pictures, Disney Enterprises, Universal Studios and 10 other firms, many of which were due to receive damages form the April settlement.

But in keeping with their well-established stance of indifference to legal action, Mr Sunde told BBC News: "I'm on vacation, sleeping a lot and eating great vegan food.

"The latest threats are just harassments from the industry of course. We've actually asked the courts to punish them with a high fine for the faulty threats."

The Pirate Bay was set up in 2003 by anti-copyright organisation Piratbyran, but for the last five years it has been run by individuals.

Millions of files are exchanged using the service every day.

No copyright content was hosted on The Pirate Bay's web servers; instead it hosted links to TV, film and music files held on its users' computers.

Following the most recent lawsuit, the site was bought by Global Gaming Factory (GGF) for 60m kronor (£4.7m) who intend to turn the site into a legal, pay service.

The new owners have outlined a "give and take" model which pays users for sharing their resources.

Μετά από απόφαση ολλανδικού δικαστηρίου, το δημοφιλές torrent site, Mininova, θα αναγκαστεί να αποσύρει όλο το υλικό που υπόκειται σε προστασία πνευματικών δικαιωμάτων, μέσα σε διάστημα τριών μηνών. Σύμφωνα με την απόφαση, σε περίπτωση που το site δεν συμβιβαστεί με τους όρους της απόφασης, θα επιβληθεί στους χειριστές του Mininova, πρόστιμο της τάξης περίπου των 5 εκατομμυρίων ευρώ.

Η υπόθεση υποβλήθηκε αρχικά από τον Stichting BREIN, έναν ολλανδικό όμιλο κατά της πειρατείας, ο οποίος χαίρει υποστήριξης από κινηματογραφικά και μουσικά στούντιο.

Σύμφωνα με την ετυμηγορία, "το δικαστήριο δεν αποδέχθηκε το επιχείρημα του Mininova, που υποστήριζε ότι ήταν αδύνατο για τους υπεύθυνους του site να βρουν και να διαγράψουν τα torrents τα οποία παρέπεμπαν σε copyrighted υλικό".
Έτσι, αφού το Mininova έχει τη δυνατότητα να φιλτράρει και να καταπολεμά τα malware από τα αρχεία του BitTorrent, το ολλανδικό δικαστήριο ισχυρίζεται ότι θα μπορεί να μπλοκάρει, επίσης, και το εν λόγω υλικό.

Μετά τη δικαστική απόφαση για κλείσιμο του Pirate Bay, τα torrent sites βρίσκονται στο επίκεντρο της δημοσιότητας. Και παρόλο που το Pirate Bay αρνήθηκε να κατεβάσει το copyrighted υλικό του, το Mininova έχει ήδη ξεκινήσει τη διαδικασία.

μπα, και αυτό αντιμετωπίζει προβλήματα κατά καιρούς.

Ξέρεις πάντως τι το σώζει στις νομικές υποθέσεις που προκύπτουν; Το ότι δεν έχει search. (Τα search sites είναι σε άλλα domain)

Ποιος θα το περίμενε. Όταν ξεκίνησαν τα torrent και πολύ λίγο μετά το rapidshare, θεωρούσα το δεύτερο χαμένο από χέρι.
Έγινε το αντίστροφο.

Όμως και για τα τόρεντ σάιτ πολλοί λέγανε ότι ήταν καλλυμένα. Οι νόμοι υπακούουν στους ισχυρους, αλλιως αλλάζουν.

Όντως τα torrent είχαν διαδοθεί με αυτή ακριβώς τη λογική, ότι οι κεντρικοί servers δε φιλοξενούν τα αρχεία αλλά μόνο τα "torrent files" και οπότε δε θα μπορούν να τα κάνουν τίποτα... :/

Μου φαινεται οτι ολα αυτα συνδεονται με τον ορο net neutrality και ολα τα παερλκομενα του. Διαφορετικα, πραγματικα δεν μπορω να καταλαβω τον λογο, για τον οποιο χρειαζονται τετοιες ταχυτητες στο ιντερνετ. Για να βλεπουμε online τηλεοραση; Αλλη εννοια δεν ειχαμε;

Ειναι παραλογο να κλεινεις καποιο site που δεν εχει τα ιδια τα δεδομενα, αλλα αρχεια που δειχνουν ποιοι εχουν τα αρχεια.

ακόμα και εάν σταματήσουν (που δεν) τα torrents.. πάντα θα υπάρχουν τα μουλαράκια που θα μεταφέρουν μια χαρά την πληροφορία..

ΣτοκχόλμηΗ εταιρεία που υποτίθεται ότι θα αγόραζε το Pirate Bay εκδιώχθηκε από χρηματιστήριο της Στοκχόλμης επειδή «παραπλάνησε» τους επενδυτές όσον αφορά την δυνατότητά της να υλοποιήσει το σχέδιο.

Σύμφωνα με τους επόπτες του χρηματιστηρίου AktieTorget, η εταιρεία Global Gaming Factory X «παρείχε λανθασμένες πληροφορίες», επέδειξε «έλλειψη υπευθυνότητας» και είναι ένοχη για «σοβαρές παραβάσεις» των κανόνων διαφάνειας του χρηματιστηρίου.

Αντίθετα με ό,τι υποστήριζε, η GGF δεν είχε συγκεντρώσει το κεφάλαιο για την εξαγορά του Pirate Bay και δεν είχε φτάσει στην τελική φάση των διαπραγματεύσεων με τις δισκογραφικές εταιρείες και τα στούντιο που θα προσέφεραν περιεχόμενο για το δικτυακό τόπο.

Η εταιρεία είχε ανακοινώσει τον Ιούνιο ότι θα αγόραζε το Pirate Bay για 8,5 εκατ. δολάρια και θα το μετέτρεπε σε νόμιμη υπηρεσία για το κατέβασμα μουσικής και ταινιών.

Η συμφωνία είναι απίθανο να υλοποιηθεί, εκτιμά τώρα ο Γκούντερ Μάρνερ, επικεφαλής της Σουηδικής Ένωσης Μετόχων. «Είναι αδύνατο να πει κανείς τι είναι αλήθεια και τι ψέμματα [...] Όλα φαίνονταν ύποπτα εξαρχής» είπε.

Πάντως ο διευθύνων σύμβουλος της GGF, η οποία αναπτύσσει λογισμικό και διατηρεί αλυσίδα Internet cafe, δήλωσε ότι δεσμεύεται να αγοράσει το Pirate Bay ακόμα και με δικά του χρήματα, αν αποσυρθούν οι επενδυτές τους οποίους δεν κατονόμασε. Υποστήριξε ότι δεν είχε πει ψέματα και χαρακτήρισε τους υπεύθυνους του χρηματιστηρίου «απίστευτα φοβισμένους» και «πολύ αδύναμους».

Ο «Όρμος των Πειρατών» είναι μια από τις δημοφιλέστερες μηχανές αναζήτησης για την ανταλλαγή αρχείων, κυρίως πειρατικών.

Τον Απρίλιο, τέσσερα από τα ιδρυτικά του μέλη καταδικάστηκαν σε ένα χρόνο φυλάκισης για συνέργια σε πειρατεία.

Today(17/11) marks the end of an era, as The Pirate Bay team announces that the world’s largest BitTorrent tracker is shutting down for good. Although the site will remain operational for now, millions of BitTorrent users will lose the use of its tracker and will instead have to rely on DHT and alternative trackers to continue downloading.

Despite this success, The Pirate Bay operators today decided to pull the plug and close down the tracker permanently. Tracker: The tracker is a server that has all the info about the people that are down- and uploading the file. The tracker itself does not have a copy of the file, it only tracks the up- and dowloaders and makes sure people are able to connect to each other. A tracker is not the same as a website that hosts torrents. Mininova for example is not a tracker, just a “torrent-site”.

DHT: DHT stands for “Distributed Hash Table”. DHT layers “decentralize” torrents what make them more stable and less reliant on the web based trackers. If a web based tracker goes down, the torrents stay alive because peers can act as “nodes” keeping the swarm intact.

Swarm: The swarm are all seeds and peers that are connected together. So if your client shows 5 seeds and 10 peers then that’s your swarm.

Indexer: Indexers are websites which list (index) .torrent files (myBitTorrent, Torrentz, Mininova etc.).

The easiest way to think about DHT is to imagine it as a form of ’super tracker’, in some ways a lot like WinMX and Kazaa of old. A large ad-hoc network of peers pass on information requests about torrents without a central server, meaning no control or single point of failure. Peer Exchange(PEX) allows the members of the swarm to exchange information about the swarm directly without polling the Tracker. This both is faster and reduces the load on the Tracker.
Peer exchange does not entirely eliminate the need for a tracker since when a peer joins the swarm of a given file for the first time it still must touch base with the tracker to find the swarm. Additionally in some scenarios it is possible for the swarm to split and occasional polling of the tracker(s) will merge it back together.

Το πρακτικο αποτελεσμα οπως το αντιλαμβανομαι εγω περα απο τα μπολντ κομματια ειναι οτι εφοσον βρηκαν τρυπα να καταδικασουν τους trackers το μελλον βρισκεται σε εναλλακτικες τεχνολογιες που (πολλες) ηδη υπηρχαν(PEX, DHT, Μagnet links) και καθιστουν την υπαρξη των trackers (σχεδον) περιττη.

Οπως χαρακτηριστικα δηλωσε το κουαρτετο του Pirate Bay:
“Now that the decentralized system for finding peers is so well developed, TPB has decided that there is no need to run a tracker anymore, so it will remain down! It’s the end of an era, but the era is no longer up2date. We have put a server in a museum already, and now the tracking can be put there as well,”

Those BitTorrent users who don’t want to go trackerless just yet can of course still use OpenBitTorrent and PublicBitTorrent, or indeed one of the many other alternative trackers currently available.

Starting today, the Pirate Bay has changed its tagline from “The world’s largest BitTorrent tracker” to “The world’s most resilient (magnetic) BitTorrent site.”

Torrentz.com is the largest BitTorrent search engine that doesn’t actually host any torrent files. This means that its millions of users still depend on third party sites in order to download .torrent files. That said, all that changes if they have the Firefox web browser installed along with the new Magnetiser add-on.


“I’ve recently written an add-on for Firefox that generates magnet links for torrent pseudo-indexers that don’t host torrents but does list them by their hashes. So far it supports Torrentz and isoHunt, but the code is simple and could be extended to any searchable indexer that shows the info hash either in the URL, or on the torrent page,” the coder of the add-on told TorrentFreak.

The add-on is not available on Firefox’s add-on section just yet..

The Pirate Bay says it will no longer serve Torrents, shifts to Magnet links

The world’s most popular file-sharing website, The Pirate Bay, is set to drop the files that have helped it become the most infamous Bittorrent hosting portal, removing support for the ageing trackers and embracing Magnet links, it has revealed in a blog post.

According to TorrentFreak, the decision to drop support for the Torrent was decided a couple of years ago but it has taken until 2012 for the website to move to an alternative linking structure. It argued that Bittorrent trackers had been made irrelevant with the introduction of technologies like DHT and PEX.

If you visit The Pirate Bay today, you will notice that the website now offers Magnet links by default. The website still hosts Torrent files but they are no longer offered in the same way as before. According to TorrentFreak, it will take a around a month for the site to drop Torrents completely.


What does this mean if you visit the website? Nothing. Most modern Bittorrent clients support the Magnet filetype and will continue to operate in the same manner.

When the switch is made permanent, the size of the website and its links will ensure the it is a lot leaner, meaning that if a user wanted, they could make a complete backup of the website and transfer it to a USB key — an excellent idea considering many governments are beginning to block access to the website around the world.

Magnet links do take a little while longer to get started, as they have to source the file from other downloaders, but it has clear advantages over its tracker-based predecessor. With The Pirate Bay making the move to Magnet links, we may see a number of other sites doing the same.

Making an announcement on its official blog, The Pirate Bay details how it dropped static trackers, then ditching torrent files back in January – when it switched to Magnet links. Now, the website has moved its data into the ever expanding network of cloud hosting services, allowing it to switch between various site deployments, should authorities try to take it down or malicious attackers attempt to bring it to its knees.

The Pirate Bay’s “Winston Brahma” explains the new setup:

    Our data flows around in thousands of clouds, in deeply encrypted forms, ready to be used when necessary. Earth bound nodes that transform the data are as deeply encrypted and reboot into a deadlock if not used for 8 hours.

    All attempts to attack The Pirate Bay from now on is an attack on everything and nothing. The site that you’re at will still be here, for as long as we want it to. Only in a higher form of being. A reality to us. A ghost to those who wish to harm us."

It’s almost like something out of a film, as the website moves between deployments and stays one step ahead of the people chasing it.

Today’s announcement is an evolution of The Pirate Bay’s previous attempts to remain decentralised, by allowing users to download a copy of the website’s database to deploy their own version of the website should an official server be pulled offline.

With a number of UK and Finnish Internet providers (and ISPs in other countries) restricting access to the website, The Pirate Bay has been forced to offer mirrors to circumvent government blockages. Moving to the cloud makes it harder for providers to block based on IP addresses, allowing users to continue sharing files.
