Το Opera Unite μεταμορφώνει τα PCs σε servers για περιεχόμενο

Η εταιρεία ανέπτυξε software το οποίο επιτρέπει την διανομή περιεχομένου χωρίς την ανάμιξη τρίτων

Η Νορβηγική εταιρεία ανάπτυξης browser, Opera Software, διέθεσε μια alpha (πρώιμη) έκδοση του Unite, ενός software που μετατρέπει έναν υπολογιστή όχι μόνο σε client αλλά και server, επιτρέποντας τη διανομή περιεχομένου σε άλλους υπολογιστές απευθείας στο Web, χωρίς να είναι αναγκαία η χρήση των πατροπαράδοτων Web servers.

Σύμφωνα με την ανακοίνωση της εταιρείας, οι υπηρεσίες του Unite θα τρέχουν μέσα στον browser, οπότε δεν είναι απαραίτητη  η εγκατάσταση περαιτέρω λογισμικού ενώ θα μπορούν να χρησιμοποιούνται όπου χρησιμοποιείται και ο Opera, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των Windows, Mac OS X και Linux. Αργότερα ενδέχεται να είναι διαθέσιμα και για συσκευές κινητής τηλεφωνίας ή άλλες φορητές συσκευές.

Η Opera έχει ήδη αναπτύξει υπηρεσίες που επιτρέπουν σε χρήστες να μοιράζονται αρχεία. Η υπηρεσία διαμοιρασμού αρχείων παράγει ένα απευθείας link με τον φάκελο όπου βρίσκεται το υλικό. Δίνοντας το συγκεκριμένο link σε φίλους, οι χρήστες έχουν τη δυνατότητα να μοιράζονται αρχεία χωρίς να χρειάζεται να τα δρομολογούν  μέσω μιας τρίτης υπηρεσίας Web.

Η τεχνολογία αυτή αποτελεί το πρώτο βήμα που θα επιτρέπει στους χρήστες να συνδέονται μεταξύ τους και να έχουν πλήρη έλεγχο των δεδομένων τους.

Εδώ και λίγες ημέρες, η εταιρία που βρίσκεται πίσω από τον Opera Browser (http://www.opera.com/), είχε κάνει μία ανακοίνωση, που ανέφερε ότι θα ξανα-εφεύρει το web. Σήμερα, παρουσιάστηκε το Opera Unite (http://labs.opera.com/downloads/), που στην ουσία μετατρέπει τον υπολογιστή μας σε server, απλά τρέχοντας τον browser Opera!

Πρόκειται για μία πολύ σημαντική εξέλιξη με διάφορες χρήσεις. Οι χρήστες μπορούν να μοιραστούν μουσική, φωτογραφίες και αρχεία μέσω του υπολογιστή τους, με άλλους φίλους, χωρίς να χρειαστεί να τα ανεβάσουν σε κάποια υπηρεσία. Είτε σε δημόσια δίκτυα, είτε σε ιδιωτικά με κωδικό πρόσβασης. Επιπλέον, ο καθένας θα μπορεί να έχει πρόσβαση στα αρχεία του όπου και να βρίσκεται.

Περιπτώσεις χρήσης:

Περίπτωση 1: Έχετε αρχεία MP3, έγγραφα ή άλλα σημαντικά αρχεία στον σκληρό δίσκο του υπολογιστή του σπιτιού σας. Αν κάνετε server τον υπολογιστή αυτό, θα μπορείτε να έχετε πρόσβαση στα αρχεία σας από το γραφείο ή από οποιαδήποτε συσκευή έχει σύνδεση στο Internet, ακόμα και το κινητό τηλέφωνο.

Περίπτωση 2: Έχετε προσωπικές φωτογραφίες που θέλετε να μοιραστείτε με τους φίλους σας ή άλλα μέλη της οικογένειάς σας. Μπορείτε να ανεβάσετε τις φωτογραφίες αυτές στο Flick, ή άλλη παρόμοια υπηρεσία. Θα ήταν όμως πιο εύκολο αν απλά, ο υπολογιστής σας ήταν web server, και έτσι δεν θα χρειαστεί να ανεβάσετε τίποτα, πουθενά.

Όλα τα παραπάνω, γίνονται πλέον πολύ εύκολα με το Opera Unite, απλά ανοίγοντας τον browser, σε Windows, Mac ή Linux PC. Τίποτα παραπάνω!

Opera Unite: A Great idea or horrible security risk?


Opera has released a technical preview of a service they call Unite. It turns the Opera browser into a Web server, which will allow for streaming and obviously file sharing.

How it works is simple; Opera simply placed a small Web server inside their browser, which the company describes as a hybrid P2P file share service and software platform. So is this a great idea, or a security nightmare waiting to happen?

The jury is still out on how secure Opera Unite will be. Users can set permission levels on the files they want to share, and there are other access controls in place. However, it is still an embedded service within a browser that is designed to share content. If you think about it, this leaves the door open to questions that seek the total number of attack surfaces. How many are there? What would work the fastest and what level of attack would get the most victims with the least possible effort.

Is Opera being innovative with their new offering? You bet they are, but at the same time, what security measures are in place? Aside from access control and file permissions, Opera is mum (for the most part) on the subject of security. Although they did confirm that there is no encryption involved in Unite.

Opera has said that when a user wants to share content, they can send a URL to someone that leads to a landing page on Unite. This will require that they also send a password to the invitee, generated by Opera. There is a second sharing option, which includes the needed password in the URL itself.

Yet, a spokesperson from Opera told both ZDNet and CNET, when asked if the Unite platform would offer the ability for someone to access data on a host PC that the host didn’t intend to share, “Definitely not,” the spokesperson said, “unless they’re a hacker.”

Oh, that’s calming and assuring news indeed.

Zscaler’s VP of Research, Michael Sutton told The Tech Herald that, “Attacks would fall into the following three categories.”

Take Social Engineering, Sutton said that an attacker could target those running Unite, “…and leverage the service to distribute malicious content in a distributed fashion. Identifying Opera Unite users isn't a challenge as the service includes functionality to discover those sharing content via Opera Unite.”

“Content could then be provided to them that they in turn would share with others. File format vulnerabilities, especially in image files would be ideal for this. A popular image could be crafted to exploit a known browser file format vulnerability and then shared with others. The distributed nature of the service is attractive from an attackers standpoint as it would make the malicious file difficult to remove.”

Sutton also pointed out that there is the botnet angle to consider, “Previously infected machines could leverage Opera Unite to share content. Victim's are much less likely to notice a legitimate service such as this and host based antivirus would not detect [or] block the content sharing capabilities as it represents legitimate functionality.”

Code execution is another surface to think about, “Should vulnerabilities in Opera be discovered which permit code execution, an attacker would be able to turn on the file sharing capabilities of Opera Unite and share arbitrary content. Looking at the security track record of Opera, it's not a matter of if but when such a vulnerability will be discovered,” Sutton said.

Overall, Sutton explained, “It's still a beta version so debate/testing is needed. Given the ease of web based file sharing that it provides I have no doubt that attackers will leverage it to share files via social engineering attacks or as a component of a larger attack which permits code execution.”

“In either case, controlling a remote PC to share files would already have been possible but this does streamline the process. The more important work to be done at this point involves testing the technology itself to see if it has weaknesses which would permit a remote attacker to force file sharing without a user's knowledge.”

Opera Unite offers file sharing, a Web server, media player, photo sharing, a chat server
(the lounge), and a service that allows posting of notes called “Fridge”. Each of these are potential security issues, comprised of privacy-based attack surfaces (think information gathering), and infection vectors for Malware.

Opera has created some interesting things over the years, including the famous and loved tabbed browsing experience that everyone uses today. However, this new “class of social software on the Web” appears to offer more trouble than features at first glance.
