Unity (submarine cable) Unity is the code name for a Trans-Pacific submarine communications cable in which Google is investing with other partners. The cable is planned to have "multi-terabit" capacity. On 26th February 2008 Google and five telecommunications operators (Bharti Airtel, Global Transit, KDDI, PacNet, and SingTel) said in a joint statement that the 6,200-mile undersea fiber-optic cable, connecting the United States to Japan, will cost $300 million. The cable will have 5 fiber pairs, each with a capacity of 960 Gbit/s, and will be expandable to 8. This will give the cable a total capability of 7.68 Tbps. The cable is being constructed by NEC and Tyco Telecommunications (a subsidiary of Tyco Electronics). The cable landing points are: Chikura, Awa District, Chiba Prefecture, Japan.
